The Science of Monsters

Sometimes I Like to Let Him Out!

The sweet aroma of bread filled the room. I stretched while my stomach grumbled. Who needs an alarm clock on an empty stomach? Killian had to create monsters that burned calories like firewood in the middle of a blizzard.

I walked to the counter where everything from eggs, bacon, and pancakes to the sesame chicken I wanted the night before awaited. It looked absolutely mouthwatering; as promised, Bruce left me alone in this hellish building. “Hello,” I asked aloud. My heart sank when no one answered right away. I hoped that I’d have someone to talk to at least even if Jarvis is creepy.

“Well, you are definitely not Dr. Banner.” The balding man sat calmly in his chair with his legs crossed and a smirk lingering on his face.

I grabbed a piece of toast and shrugged. “Neither are you.”

“Where are your clothes?”

“Still at the store.” I chewed my toast. “I’m starving, do you mind?”

“It’s not polite to not offer food to your guest.”

I mimicked his smirk. “You’re not my guest, and I don’t like smug men staring at me like that.”

“What else am I supposed to do when a woman walks into a room completely naked?”

I blushed before I shrugged again. “It’s like 4 million degrees in here, how are you wearing a suit, Penguin?”

“My name's not Penguin, you've got the wrong story." He grinned. "It’s more like 57, and it’s freezing in here. Don’t you have a furnace?”

“I am one.”

“Who are you,” he blurted out before taking a piece of my toast. I growled for a moment before I grabbed my sheet and covered myself.

“I wanna know who you are? Aren’t you the idiot who broke into the Hulk’s hideout?”

“You already know me so well.” He rolled his eyes. I grabbed a few pancakes and drowned them in syrup.

“My name is Julie. Bruce saved my life, and then let me stay with him after all my stuff got destroyed.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Well, believe what you want, but I need to eat before I die and then shower.”

“I’m Agent Coulson, by the way.”

“Agent?” I looked at him for a moment before I swallowed my food the wrong way causing a coughing fit.

“Are you-“

“You mean you’re the people who specialize in the unexplained shit?”

“No, I am one of them. Not all of them.”

I glared. “Why are you here? I don’t know anything, and I’m completely normal.” I backed away from his calm down hands.

“I’m just looking for Banner. Shield needs him for a project.”

“You can’t have him!”

“What?”

“Listen here, whatever your name is!” I poked my finger at him. “Bruce Banner is not some weapon that you can point and fire. Plus he’s helping me right now. So, you cannot have him. Got it?”

Coulson took a step back as he watched me carefully. I glared as he smiled. “I’d still rather talk to him about the situation.”

“The answer is hell no! Now get out!”

“You are not someone I would’ve imagined Banner with.”

“Oh, why’s that,” I hissed as I stalked forward causing him to take several steps toward the door.

“Because you are nothing like the woman that he claimed to be in love with for all those years.”

“See, here’s the thing.” Scarlett put her hand on her hip. “I don’t know what you are talking about. I am not with Bruce Banner like that, alright! He saved my life, now we’re friends, and I really have nowhere else to go.”

“Really?” Coulson smirked taking a few steps toward me. Skepticism smeared across his face as the wheels in his hamster cage of a brain spun. “He hasn’t told you about Texas!” He laughed. “You can’t be that big of a deal, even if you are just a friend. So, why are you being so protective?”

“He saved my life, jackass!” I glared while trying my best to keep my heat under control. “Did I just explain this to you?”

“You’d be more suitable for Stark…Too bad he already has Pepper.”

I felt my skin grow raw as my arms began to glow. “Get out!”

“I’ll be back.”

“If you don’t leave now you won’t be alive.”

I turned my back on him as I took deep breaths. Thoughts of sunny days and clouds floating in the sky forcefully filled my eyes. Calmness. I turned the cold shower water on before I threw myself under the water. Steam poured from my body creating my own shower curtain. I heard the door slam as I breathed.

Bruce arrived at the car lot around 4 A.M. He’d gotten three cars ready for pick up by the time the sun came rose. Big Mike walked into the old show room around 8, as Bruce finished repairing car number four’s busted oil pan. The Chevelle was in pretty good shape other than the pan. “I said early, not pull an all nighter! How long have you been here?” Mike asked as Bruce got behind the wheel.

“A couple hours,” he lied. “I came back late yesterday and finished a few of these. They’re ready for pick up whenever you are.”

“Liar.” Mike frowned.

He shrugged while cranking the 1972 Chevelle. It roared to life before he backed it into the spot beside the 2001 Transam. He slammed the car door, placed the keys on the rack and waved for the salesman to get the next car. “I promise, I have not been here all night. How many cars do I have to get fixed today?”

“You’ve got four lined up...” Mike counted on his fingers. “About twelve or so, plus whatever we manage to sell today. Two Caddies, the Mustang, that Chevy pick-up, a few fords, the other Chevelle, the Sunfire, and three or four Toyotas.”

“That’s not that bad. I think I can finish most of that before lunch.” Bruce nodded and motioned for the salesman to stop the car. “I checked the Caddies, they just need plugs, and new motor bolts. The Mustang just needs new breaks. So, those should be fairly easy.”

“We’re still selling, don’t forget that. I need most of the cars we’ve sold finished by leaving time, Bob, so don’t get too cocky about it yet.”

“I got it.” Bruce smiled as he popped the hood. “We’ll be empty by closing time, and I’m not being cocky about it…yet.”

“Liar!” Mike laughed and nodded.

I paced the floors fuming. How dare that man just waltz in here like he owns the place and demand to know who I am! My hands grasped my head trying to hold my skull together. Everything burned. The skin around my scar glowed brighter than the rest. Cold showers didn’t work; breathing definitely doing nothing; nothing seemed to calm me down!

Where was I supposed to go if Bruce decided to up and leave? That lab he pulled me from was my home, my work, and my life. I have nothing. My anger grew before it turned into sadness.

I tried to lean against the counter but the countertop melted beneath my hand. Water filled my palms as I ran cool water over my hands. Ocean. Calm skies. Vastness.

Steam bellowed from the skin as I breathed deeply. My arms slowly stopped glowing, but my heat signature was far from gone. I closed my eyes as the cool faucet water ran over my hands and wrists controlling the pulse with each gentle pat.

There’s no telling how long I stood like that, but I heard the door squeak open. My heart raced. “You better not be here to talk to me more.” I shut the water off and turned towards the person who stood there.

Bruce finished fourteen cars before lunch. The worst of them needed three gaskets and a radiator replacement. Mike informed him of four more sales, which he finished in just a few hours. There was nothing too hectic that day, and he managed to get off work around 6 P.M.

He made the trek to the warehouse faster than usual. Finding a black town car parked close did not help Bruce rest, nor did it stop him from worrying. Scarlett hadn’t shown her true colors, and while he had suspicions, he hadn’t figured out what she was capable of doing.

Bruce ran to the door before someone grabbed his arm. He snatched it free before glaring at the low level agent. “I wouldn’t do that again if I were you.”

“I can’t let you in-“

“Do you know who I am?” Bruce hissed.

“Yes, but-“

“Do you know what happens when I get angry?”

“Yes, bu-“

“Do I have to show you?!”

The Agent took a step back as Bruce barged through the door. He took a deep breath as he looked around the room. Coulson stood in the middle while hiding something behind him. Bruce held the bridge of his nose before he spoke.

“Dr. Banner-“

“Stop!” Bruce barked. “Where is she, Coulson!”

“Right here.” He stepped aside. Scarlett was strapped to a chair with at least a dozen ice packs covering her body. “I had a talk with her earlier, she got upset, and I didn’t want to leave her alone.” Coulson glanced at her.

“What’d you say?”

“Should we get her some clothes?”

“Phil!”

“I just told her that I wanted to talk to you about a project for Shield.”

“I already said no!”

“I came to tell you more about it! You’d be going home, Bruce.”

“I am home!” Bruce growled. He glared at Coulson. “If you would just let me be alone I would be better. I haven’t had an outbreak since New York!”

“This isn’t about Hulk; this is about your bio molecular studies.” Coulson held up his hands and shrugged. “We are offering you a lab in Texas.”

“What…”

“Bruce,” Scarlett croaked. He turned towards her. “Untie me.” Her eyes were weak and tired. Her skin was scorched.

“I won’t leave her alone like this.” He untied her arms and legs releasing her from the ice packs. Her skin was clammy. “You shouldn’t have done this to her.”

“She shouldn’t have threatened to blow me to kingdom come...” Coulson smirked. “And I don’t mean in a good way.” He turned to his partner. “See what I did there?”

Bruce rolled his eyes. “You didn’t!”

“I said a few other choice words too, but he chose to play dumb.” She took a deep breath. “I want pants.”

Coulson looked over his shoulder and nodded. A woman about two sizes larger than Scarlett brought in an extra shirt and pair of pants. “We’re going to need her to come with us,” he stated. Scarlett laughed.

“No. She’s staying right here until she gets on her feet.”

“She is a threat, Bruce. What is-“

“God,” Scarlett hissed, “not this stupid conversation again. I am a part of an experiment called Extremis.”

“What’s-“

“Tony Stark will fill you in when he gets home.” Bruce kicked her gently. She glared at him.

“Tony Stark is dead,” Coulson stated.

“No, ask Jarvis!”

“Scarlett! Shut up!” Bruce hissed.

“What? The man is pissed off! He’ll be fine, and you should understand that considering we are controlled by rage which is how we survive.”

“Why hasn’t anyone informed-“ Coulson started.

“Coulson!” Bruce hissed. “No one trusts you enough to inform you of anything. The moment we call you are on our doorstep trying to drag us to super villain jail!”

“No I-“

“Phil, get out.” Bruce growled.

“Banner!”

“Get out of my…” Bruce’s eyes were stinging. He glanced at his hands, pale green.

“You can control it now, remember,” Coulson stated calmly.

Bruce smiled. “Sometimes, I like to let him free.”
