The End is Where We Begin

Victory Looks Like A Distant Dream

Clint

It’s the day of the party and I walk into the hotel room I’m sharing with Jessie just as she’s finishing up her outfit for tonight’s events. She’s looks so beautiful in that classic old Hollywood way.

I clear my throat causing the blonde to look up at me, “where are you going to hide a gun while wearing that outfit?”

A smile creeps onto her lips as she walks over to me, wrapping her arms around my neck. “That’s where you come in my darling Hawkeye. You’re the body guard. I’m just our ticket in.” A chuckle escapes her lips as she walks off to the closet before opening it; pulling out a tuxedo and a mask.

“I’m not wearing that!” I protest as she walks closer to me, “I’m not getting dressed like a trained monkey.”

“This is a black tie affair, you’re dressing up Barton.” She sternly tells me, “I’m not letting you blow my cover because pretty boy superhero doesn’t want to get dressed up.” She violently shoves the tuxedo to my chest before backing up.

“If this tux isn’t on your body by the time I get back from checking up on our team of agents, your ass in mine Barton.” Jessie warns before walking out of the room, closing the door behind her.

“I can’t believe I’m letting a 19 year old girl boss me around.” I mutter to myself as I place the tuxedo on the bed and begin to strip out of my clothing. This mission better be worth it.

“Where’s Barton?” Is the first thing Maria asks as soon as I get on one private channel video chat.

“Upstairs getting dressed for the party.” I inform him, “we’ve got to look the part so I took it upon myself to shop for his tuxedo. You owe me 300 dollars by the way.”

“This is a mission to get the program, not a fashion show.” Maria warns me.

“You really need to remove that stick from your ass.” I tell her, “I’m well aware this isn’t a fashion show. But we’re going to be mingling with society’s finest. If we’re going to blend in, we’re going to have to dress the part. Am I right?” Silence. “That’s what I thought.”

“Just make sure you get the program.” She clicks off quickly. A sigh escapes my lips as I exit the van, not before stealing a pack of gum from one of the field agents that’s helping Clint and I.

I get back in our hotel room just as Clint is buttoning up his jacket. My jaw drops causing the wad of gum in my mouth to almost fall onto the floor. Clint sees my expression in the mirror and smirk.

“Like what you see?” He jokes before turning around to me.

“You clean up well Barton.” I compliment him, “but we’ve got to do something about that hair.” I say as I go up to him and start messing with it.

He swats my hands away and glares at me, “my hair is fine.”

“Yea if you’re a surfer.” I chuckle as I ushering him into the bathroom and force him to sit down on the edge of the bathtub. Biting my lower lip in thought, I try and think of how I could make this agent look like a man of wealth.

“You know, you don’t seem the type.” Clint’s voice snaps me out of my thoughts.

“What do you mean?” I ask before turning around and grabbing my hair gel.

“You don’t seem the type that enjoys the dressing up and mingling with people that has money.” He explains, “you seem like you’re more down to earth than that.”

“I grew up in this life, so it’s not whether I enjoy this; this is just my life.” I explain to him, “this is the only life I know. If I could, I would walk away from everything.”

“You have that option to--”

I shake my head before interrupting him, “I can’t just walking away from everything. I grew up in this life Clint. Going from the top of the world to rock bottom is a long fall. I’ve been busting my ass to get back up top; that’s my home. That’s the only life I know.”

“And you can walk away from your past; it really is that easy.” He counters, “trust me I know.”

“You have no idea what I’m going through. I’ve been betrayed by the very few people I trusted. I was left for dead by my family. Yet I have the need to get back in that damn society that exiled me. I can’t walk away!”

“I know exactly what you’re going through. I was betrayed by my family and I was left for dead. My own brother watched me to get the living shit beat out of me and walked away. I knew that they weren’t worth it. I walked away!” He exclaims, shutting me up completely. “After this mission, promise me you’ll walk away. I’m not talking just away from your family but away from everything. Stop working for SHIELD and stop hacking. Go back to school and get a real job; a boring 9 to 5 job. You’re young, you still have a chance.”

“Why do you care so much about me?” I ask, shocked that he actually wants me out of this life.

“I’d hate to see you get killed.” He simply states. “Now lets get downstairs, the party should be starting soon.” With that he walks out of the bathroom and seconds later I hear the hotel room door slam shut. A sigh escapes my lips as I walk out of the bathroom and head into the room. I quickly grab and place my hat on my head and grab both my mask and Clint’s. I take my laptop case and head out of the room; closing it behind me. It’s now or never…
