Can't Handle This

Chapter 27

Cj walked into the Union Square Cafe, confident on the outside but sobbing like a baby on the inside.

"Carolyn," he said with almost a sing-song quality. "I've missed you."

"I go by CJ now, dip."

"Ooo, Carolyn, you're being awfully sassy for someone who's facing punishment."

"I really don't see how this is punishment," Cj said as she sat down and took a sip of the coffee in front of her. "Especially when you buy me hazelnut coffee. This is almost like a date, if anything."

"Carolyn," the blonde man started. "Goby would've been extremely pissed to know how far you've fallen from your goal."

"And he would've been pissed at you for calling him 'Goby.'"

"That's beside the point, Carolyn. The Goblin isn't around anymore."

"Then why should I be afraid?"

He leaned forward, his black rimmed glasses highlighting his almost black eyes. "Because he left us in charge with a mission. And you're dropping the ball, Carolyn. You're besmirching his name. The one person that could ever trust you."

CJ swallowed nervously, but kept her poker face. "Obviously you haven't been paying attention. Everyone in Avengers Tower trusts me to the point where they love me."

"Oh, no," he said simply as he lifted his cup to his lips. "I've noticed. And I've also noticed that you're starting to feel the same way towards them."

Cj shrugged. "All part of the act."

He chuckled. "I don't think so."

Tony woke up in his bed with a naked Steve pressed up against him. The billionaire smiled, kissed the soldiers head, and let himself drift back to sleep.

Bruce was sitting with Pamplemousse in the kitchen, smiling and laughing.

"Daddy," she started as she smiled brightly. "When I get bigger, can I be whatever I want?"

Just then, Brooke walked into the kitchen and gravitated towards the coffee pot, pretending like she wasn't listening to them. But in all actuality, she was terrified that he would say the same thing that her mother had said to her.

"Of course," he said, smiling back at his daughter. "What would you like to be?"

A large grin spread across the child's face. "I want to be a princess! I want to live in a castle and have a puppy! No! I want to have ten puppies!"

Bruce laughed and picked her up effortlessly, setting her on his lap. "Ten puppies? That's a lot!"

Pamplemousse giggled uncontrollably as he tickled her and held her close.

Brooke turned around to look at them, feeling so overjoyed.

Bruce and Pamplemousse stopped giggling and looked at her, still holding their smiles.

However, Bruce's smile faded when he looked at the teen. "Brooke, what's wrong?"

It was then that Brooke realized she was crying. "Nothing," she muttered with a smile. "I'm just happy that our little Pamplemousse finally found someone to really love her."

Loki sat in bed for a while, not quite knowing what to do. Hetalia had been right. He did feel an overwhelming amount of want for Toni.

He wanted her to be happy. He wanted her to be able to confide in someone. He wanted to take away her nightmares. He wanted to be there for her. He just didn't know how to.

"Having trouble finding your way out of bed, Frosty Paws?"

Loki looked up at the air vent to see Clint sitting there. "Nothing of your concern, archer."

Clint shrugged. "I don't usually spy. It's not my job. But I was looking for someone else's room and saw that you looked fairly troubled."

The god rolled his eyes. "I thought you despised me."

Clint jumped down from the vent and leaned against the wardrobe. "I'm not saying that I don't. I'm just stating the fact that you look like you could use someone to talk to."

Loki scoffed. "Well I appreciate your...concern, but I don't need help."

Clint shrugged again and walked out into the hall. "Whatever you say."

****

CJ saw Clint first, thankfully, as he walked out of Loki's room. "Clint!" she quietly exclaimed. "Come here!"

Clint looked over at Cj and followed her outside and into the garden. "What's going on?" he asked.

"I need your help with something."

"What do you need?"

Cj shifted from one foot to the other nervously. "I need your help in stealing some things."

Toni welded some of the Iron Man suit together when a small tapping on the glass made her jump. She spun around to see Pepper standing there.

Pepper walked in after punching in the security code and approached the teen. "Good morning, Toni," she said with a smile. "What are you working on?"

She smiled as she set down some tools and backed up to admire her work. "I'm working on a new suit for my dad."

The redhead nodded. "It seems to be coming along greatly."

"It is," she said with a sort of pride in her voice. "All I need to do is add a few more features and give it a wicked paint job, then she'll be finished."

"Excuse me, Ms. Potts?" JARVIS chimed politely. "I'm afraid Mr. Stark is requesting your presence."

Pepper nodded. "Thank you, JARVIS." She looked at Toni and smiled. "Keep up the good work, okay? I'll see you later."

Pepper headed up the stairs to Tony's room and softly knocked on the door.

"Come in!" Tony said happily.

Pepper let herself in and saw Tony with a smile on his face. "Since when have you been a morning person?"

"Since today, Pep," he said sincerely. "I'm in love, and it's the best feeling in the world."

"You sent for me to tell me that you're in love?"

Tony shook his head. "Oh no. Don't be silly! I do legitimately need your assistance, but I just...I've got to tell someone, but I don't know who else."

"Your daughter may be a good person to talk to."

"And how would I go about telling my daughter that I'm in love with one Steve Rogers?"

****

"You're crazy," Clint said as he tried to get around Cj. "I mean it. You're bat-shit fucking insane."

"Please, Clint?" Cj asked with sincerity. "It's a matter of life or death. I really really need your help!"

"Life or death? How does a million dollars and a plane ticket to Thailand equal life or death?"

"I got way in over my head, and I'm in a lot of trouble. Please, Clint, you've gotta help me."

Clint looked her over and put his hands on his hips in contemplation. "What'd you do?"

Cj shook her head. "Let's just say I've got red in my ledger and I physically cannot wipe it out."

Comments

Chapter 28 is sad because Cj says "Let's just say I've got red in my ledger and I physically cannot wipe it out.". That's sad because Natasha says that in Avengers.

I am going to cry. Natasha is my favorite Avenger and SHIELD agent. I've always looked up to her character. I almost cried during chapter 25 and got some weird looks from my family. Well they don't understand so if they have a problem then they can suck it.
