My Saving Grace

Part Thirteen

I felt the rhythmic pumping of my heartbeat in my ears as I cranked up the speed of the treadmill I was on. Even though I was practically in physically perfect shape, I still found that I enjoyed a trip to the gym. Exercise helped me relax; it gave me something other than my problems to focus on.

I shot a smile over to my right as Steve stepped onto the treadmill next to me. I was pretty sure that he came to the gym for reasons similar to my own. His body was in tip top shape, with no need for four trips to the gym a week. But Steve had told me that working out helped to calm him down.

I could only imagine all of the emotions coursing through the poor guy. He had to be angry at the loss of anyone he had known. He must feel lonely, even with me and all of the other Avengers and agents that constantly surrounded him. I couldn’t imagine how it must feel to always be lonely in a crowded room.

We ran alongside each other for a good thirty minutes before I finally shut my treadmill down and stepped off. I had been going for over an hour now.

“I’m gonna head out. Come see me when you’re done?” I called over the whirring of his treadmill.

He nodded and smiled to show he had heard me and I left the large gym, feeling much more relaxed than I had before.

-BREAK-

“So, what? You’re just going to try and bed the guy? You haven’t even been together for a month.” Tony chuckled, making himself comfortable on my bed.

“Hark who’s talking.” I grumbled with a roll of my eyes.

“But we’re not talking about me. We’re talking about you.” Tony paused to snicker. “And Captain Abstinence.” He added humorously.

“If you’re not going to be supportive, I’m going to stop talking to you.” I warned playfully, glaring at him over my shoulder.

There was a knock on my door before Tony could reply and my eyes went wide. Now that Steve was here, just on the other side of my door, I was nervous.

“Get out.” I commanded, dragging Tony up off my bed and towards the door.

I opened the door and Steve had just raised his large hand to knock again.

“Hi Steve. Bye Tony!” I quipped, pushing Tony out the door and pulling Steve inside.

I quickly closed the door in Tony’s face before he could make some smart alec comment and get me even more flustered than I already was.

“Amanda, are you ok?” Steve asked, looking concerned.

I tittered nervously and flitted around my room, picking up dirty articles of clothing and tossing them into a corner.

“Of course I am.”

I heard the squeak in my voice and I knew I wasn’t acting like myself. I took a second to take a deep breath and calm myself.

“Why do you ask?” I questioned, sounding more like myself.

“You just seem… nervous.” He admitted, shrugging his shoulders.

“I’m fine.” I assured him, shaking my head and grinning.

I moved to stand in front of him and peered up into his large oceanic eyes, my hands finding his broad shoulders and my lips finding the smooth skin of his neck. He groaned when I nipped the thin skin just below his ear and his large hands found my small jaw. He tilted my head up and I leaned up to meet his lips hungrily.

After a moment, we found our way to my bed and I fell back with a contented sigh, Steve moving to straddle my hips. One of his hands settled on my waist while the other cupped the side of my face, and his lips softly peppered kisses along my jaw line and down my neck to my collarbone.

A small moan left my lips and I closed my eyes in bliss when he nibbled on my ear lobe and a chuckle rumbled in his chest. For a man that had never really been with a woman, he damn sure knew what he was doing. I felt him hesitate above me and opened my eyes to see him contemplating my button up shirt.

I smiled softly and guided his hands to the top button. He peered up at me through his lashes, a small blush flushing his cheeks as he grinned at me. He turned his attention back to undoing the buttons of my shirt before lowering his lips to the swell of my left breast. He kissed down the slope, through the middle of my chest and up the rise of my right breast. I was losing my breath beneath him, my hands tangled tightly in his hair.

I pulled Steve away from my chest and began to tug his shirt up over his head but was interrupted by a knock on the door.

“Shit.” I cursed softly, letting my hands drop from his torso to the soft fabric of my comforter.

“Barton. Fury called an Avengers meeting.” Agent Hill called through the door. “And if the Captain is in there with you, bring him too.”

I bushed madly and Steve chuckled, a blush creeping back onto his cheeks as well.

“Am I to assume this is why you were nervous?” He asked, his blue eyes twinkling in amusement.

I nodded, pulling his lips to mine softly.

“I didn’t know if you’d fall for my seduction.” I confessed playfully batting my lashes at him.

“I think it’s impossible not to.” He admitted, rolling off of me and sitting up on the edge of my bed, combing his mussed hair back into place with his fingers.

I joined him on the edge of the bed and began buttoning my shirt back into place.

“Amanda.” He began quietly.

The tone he used made my fingers freeze on the last button of my shirt.

“Maybe we should wait. I want to do this right.”
