Miss Fire

Standing Here Searching For More

“Daisy, black again?” My agent and good friend, Mary, asks as she walks into the restaurant I’m meeting her at. “I know you lost your baby brother but it’s been two weeks.”

“I’m still in mourning, he was more than just family, he was my best friend and muse,” I explain to her. “I have no idea what I’m going to do now. All ideas I had for my new book have flown out the window.”

“So you have nothing for your new vampire series?” She asks, annoyance evident in her voice.

“The whole Vampire thing is overdone anyone, thanks to Twilight.” I reason with her, “I do, however, have a new idea for a completely different series.”

“I’m listening…”

“The series is going to be called Never a Hero,” I begin to tell her, “it’s going to be about superheroes.”

“Like comic book characters?” She questions me, “are you turning into a comic book writer now?”

“Now, this isn’t going to be like Batman and shit like that; this is going to be about ordinary people thinking they’re not heroes when in fact they are.” I explain to her.” Mike was in the process of writing a comic book called Miss Fire. It was centered around a blonde heroine, I’m going to continue his idea.”

“Are you sure you can do this?” Mary asks, naturally concerned -whether it’s for the idea or the money I’ll never know. “You could lose a lot of money on this idea.” Should have know it was about the money, I think to myself. “People are expecting you to be writing about vampires falling in love with human girls and raising hell.”

“How am I suppose to grow as a writer if I keep writing about the same stale boring ideas that have been written time and time again?” I question her, “I’m through writing about vampires. Sure they gave me my fame but it’s not my passion anymore. I have no one here to make fun of me for writing about it. Mike was the only reason why I put out those books. He said vampire books were stupid, so I had to prove him wrong. Now I have nothing.”

“But you’re going to try and make a book about superheroes work?” Mary sighs, “you’ve really gone off the deep end, have you?”

I look at her, questioning myself on what I should do. Before I know it, I’m getting up out of the chair, “You’re fired.” With that, I walk out of the restaurant. I didn’t need her in my life if she’s going to question my choices in life. I didn’t go “off the deep end”, I finally realized that I’m more than just vampire books. I could write about anything I write, my agent was just holding me back…

I pull up to my house and see Gretchen on the porch, petting Mike’s Bloodhound, Copper. A smile appears on my lips as I kill the engine and get out of the car. Gretchen looks up at me and smile, “how did you meeting go?”

“I fired Mary.” I shrug before I’m greeted by the 5 year old dog. A laugh escapes my lips as he knocks me down and slobbers on my face, “come on Copper, get off.” I say between laughs as I push him away.

“Why did you fire her?” Gretchen questions as she walks over and helps me up, “she didn’t like the idea?”

“She thought I’ve gone off the deep end.” I reply, dusting myself off. “She thinks I should stick with the vampire stories.”

“Twilight ruined that genre, every girl thinks vampires sparkle like diamonds in the sun; they fucking burn!”

I let out a laugh, I knew there was a reason why I like this girl, “try telling that to Mary. She’s probably one of those Twihards.”

“So what are you going to do?” Gretchen asks as we head into the house, “are you going to continue writing Miss Fire?”

“Of course I am, I’m just gonna have to find a place to write it in peace.” I reply, “I’m thinking about moving to New York, where the comic was based from.”

“Are you serious?” Gretchen probes, “even after everything they went through this summer? The whole alien thing and nearly getting destroyed?”

“Iron Man is out there, he was Mike’s favorite superhero,” I explain, “if I’m going to write a novel about average people becoming superheroes I might as well go to New York.”

“Last time I checked, Tony Stark isn’t your average person. He’s like a billionaire.”

“Just because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth and a Tiffany rattle doesn’t make him any different than us, “I explain to her, “he’s just a little larger than life. But he didn’t have to become Iron Man; he chose to become this iconic superhero.”

“And let me guess, that’s what your looking for?” Gretchen questions.

“Of course, that’s how the Never a Hero series is going to start. Miss Fire isn’t a superhero just yet. She chooses to become one, I just have to find out why.”

“You think New York is going to hold the answers to that question, don’t you?”

I look at Gretchen and smile -and a real one at that-, “I know New York holds the answer to everything I’m questioning. I need to get out of here. Oklahoma has nothing for me anymore.”

“What are you going to do about the horses, Copper and your cats Motley and Crue?” She questions.

“I know your apartment lease is almost up, how about you move in here?” I ask her, “you’re great with the horses and you love Copper. Even if you don’t know what you’re doing, the ranch workers come in twice a week to help around. You’ll be fine.”

“You’re seriously giving me the house both you and Mike grew up in, just like that?” She asks, tears forming in her green eyes.

“You’re family, Gretch, this is your home now too.”

The tiny redhead smiles before pulling me into a back breaking hug, “thank you so much, Daisy. You’re selfless, you know that.” She pushes herself away from me, a smile still on her lips, “you’re a true superhero.”

“I don’t know about that, I’m just caring.” I laugh, “but you’re welcome to live here. No rent, just take care of the horses and Copper.”

“I think I can do that.” She chuckles, wiping her tears away, “I hope New York helps you out. I hope you find your muse out there.”

“I hope so too.” Deep down, I’m scared -terrified to be honest- but I know moving is what I need. I can’s stay in this small town any longer; I have no reason to. My muse is out there in the big city, I just got to find it…
