Heart of Ice

Recruit.

Looking over the files of the members of the Avengers Initiative, Nick Fury sighed. They were missing something, he just couldn't figure out what it was. Maria Hill, Assistant Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. decided to voice her opinion. "Sir, maybe we should try contacting Professor Xavier. I'm sure he could make a suggestion for-" Fury cut her off.

"Xavier would never allow one of his students to become apart of the Avengers. You know that as well as I do."

"We should at least try, Sir." The man sighed, closing his eye. He knew she was right.

"Fine. Ready a jet. We leave in an hour."

Fury and Hill stood in front of Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr at their house in Westchester County, New York. "Nice place you have here," Fury said, admiring the large mansion behind the two men.

"Cut the crap, what do you want?" Lehnsherr said gruffly.

"Erik," Xavier admonished. "They're our guest."

"We need your help," Hill said, shifting her stance slightly from one foot to the other.

"Why?" Lehnsherr asked, his arms tightening around his chest.

"May we-"

"Please, come in. We can discuss this in my study," Xavier said in a clipped tone. Fury and Hill exchanged looks. He knew.

When they walked into the house, the buzz of quiet laughter and conversation stopped and Fury glanced into the main living area to see a bunch of kids, seeming to range from eleven to nineteen all spread out around the room. One of the girls in the room, a pale blond with even paler skin locked eyes with him and he was surprised to feel a chill take a hold of him. Her eyes were like staring into ice. It wasn't just the color; her eyes seemed to convey such pain and coldness.

They continued into the house and up a flight of steps. When they reached the door, Fury and Hill were hastily moved in and the door shut quietly. Xavier took a deep breath and then turned, his facial features were not the same warm, inviting they were mere minutes ago. In their place were stony planes. "What do you want with my children?" He asked. Lehnsherr's eyes widened, and they took on a stormy look as he stood next to Xavier.

"Yes, what do you want with the children?"

"As I said earlier, we need your help," Hill said calmly as if her hand wasn't itching to take her side arm.

"And you think children would save you?" Xavier asked in a condescending tone. "Please answer honestly. I don't want to have to read your mind but I will to find out what you want with my children."

"The Avengers Initiative," Fury said, knowing that Xavier would make do with his threat if needed. "We need more... fire power if you will." Lehnsherr looked over at Xavier. The smaller of the two men nodded.

"Why the kids? Why didn't you ask us to help you with your little project?" Lehnsherr spat out his question.

"You two run this institute. You can't be in two places at once. We need one of your students."

Gwendolyn Falcon sat on the end of the couch, Alex Summers, a blond with blue eyes and her brother in every way but blood, leaning against her side. "Who do you think those two people are?" He asked quietly. She shrugged.

"No idea, but the one with eye-patch gave me a look."

"Are you sure you didn't give him one first?"

"No. At least, I'm pretty sure I didn't."

"Gwen, you're the queen of cold looks. You probably gave him one first." Gwen just rolled her eyes.

"Yeah, yeah."

"Gwen?" A little voice asked. The pale blond turned her head and saw Jean Grey and Ororo Munroe, two eleven year olds looking at her.

"What's up, midgets?" She asked, picking up Ororo and setting her on her lap and carding her fingers through Jean's red locks.

"Could you make us some breakfast?" Jean asked. Gwen smiled.

"Sure, honey. Come on." She stood up, placing the little dark skinned girl on her feet and grabbed one of their hands, leading them to the kitchen. They each sat on a stool, babbling on about something that happened during school yesterday. Scott, Alex's younger brother, trotted in, his eyes obscured by dark glasses.

"What are you making?" He asked. Gwen smiled.

"Bacon and eggs," she said. "You want anything added?" He bit his bottom lip and then let out a shriek as Alex wrapped an arm around Scott and picked him up.

"Waffles?" Alex asked. Gwen rolled her eyes but nodded.

"Sure."

About five minutes later, everyone, except the professors and the two guests were in the spacious kitchen. Gwen was cooking the bacon, Raven, a scaly blue woman with red hair and yellow eyes, was making the waffles, and Alex and Sean, a teen with shaggy light red hair and green eyes, were making the eggs. Hank, a furry blue teen with glasses, was watching the kids and keeping the entertained while the rest made breakfast.

Gwen laughed at something Raven said and then quieted when she noticed Charles, Erik, and the two guests in the doorway. She noticed the anguished look that Charles was desperately trying to hide and the anger that Erik had no regrets showing and her eyes turned to ice. Her gaze traveled to the dark skinned, one-eyed man in all black and the brunette with blue eyes next to him.

"Charles? Erik?" Raven asked, and the blond knew the woman saw the same things she did.

"Raven, after breakfast, I need you to watch the younger kids and keep them in the living area, please. The rest of you are to join Erik and I in my study," Charles announced and then turned and walked away with three others following.

"What the hell is going on?" Sean asked quietly.

"I don't know," Alex said, "but whatever it is, it's got Prof upset and Erik angry."

"Dude, Erik's always angry, though. That's just his face," Sean joked, trying to lighten the mood. It worked for the most part, and the group quickly finished breakfast for the kids and then walked to Charles' study, leaving the kids with Raven.

Gwen opened the door and was the first to step in. The first thing she noticed was the way the one-eyed man assessed them all as they walked through the door. The second thing was that whatever he was thinking was pissing Charles off badly.

The teens stood there in a line for about five minutes, being stared at by the man and the woman before Charles snapped. "Would you please get on with it? You're making them nervous." Gwen blinked. She didn't even notice that she was.

"My name is Nick Fury," cue snort from Sean, "and I am the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. I'm here to recruit one of you for the Avengers Initiative." That peaked the blond's interest. She wanted to know more about this. "You would be leaving here and joining a team made of Earth's mightiest heroes."

"Would we have to leave?" Hank asked. Fury nodded.

"Yes, but as long as you aren't on an assignment you can return for a little while."

"Remember, you can say no if you don't want to do this," Charles said in a slightly pleading voice.

"Professor Xavier is correct; this is of your own choice," the woman said. The teens all leaned forward and glanced at each other, speaking without using words, showing how close they were. About five seconds later, they all straightened back up.

"I decline; I have too much to do for the CIA to be getting mixed up into another government agency," Hank said with a bit of a bite to his tone.

"No for me, too, dude," Sean said in his normal stoner voice. "I can't leave my family."

Alex and Gwen were the only two left. Fury looked at them both with his one eye and the two blonds smirked.

"I'm game," Alex said. Gwen just nodded in agreement.

"Good, Agent Hill and I will be looking over your files and talking with your professors to see which of you is a better fit," Fury said, turning his back to the teens. Gwen moved her gaze past the man to Charles and Erik. The smaller man looked slightly pained; his eyes crinkled around the edges, something that only happened when he was pain, whether it be emotional or physical.

The four teens walked out of the room and back down the steps to the kitchen where it looked like the kids didn't even touch their breakfast. "Why haven't you guys eaten yet?" Gwen asked.

"They wanted to wait on you four," Raven said. The blond nodded in understanding and the group dug in.

Looking at both files, Fury glanced at Hill. "What do you think? Summers would be able to supply power, but he doesn't seem to have a lot of control over it. His anger is also a problem; we're already going to have one person with anger issues on the team, we don't need another."

"Falcon could be extremely useful. She's like a blond Agent Romanov," Hill pointed out. Charles was trying his hardest to stay quiet. He hated this. They were going to put one of his children at risk, in danger.

Charles, you need to calm down.

The smaller man took a deep, calming breath and shakily exhaled.

How can I calm down, Erik? Our children-

Are going to be just fine. We've trained them well.

Charles couldn't deny that one. They have trained them well. Which ever Fury picked, would be fine. They had to be.

"We've come to a decision," Hill announced, handing Charles the file of the chosen teen. He glanced at the name and a cold rush of fear washed over him.

Not Gwen, not our daughter.

He placed his hand on Erik's back, thinking that man didn't realize he was thinking so loudly. Unfortunately, the same thoughts were traveling through his head. "Gwendolyn Falcon, welcome to the Avengers," Fury said, a strange gleam in his dark eye. Charles just shut his eyes. Not their daughter.
