A supernova

Chapter 1

It had been almost a year after the New York fiasco when I moved into the tower. If you had told me ten years ago I would be staying in one of the biggest towers in the world with a whole team of superheroes I would have screamed with joy and ran around my room for five days. But now; standing in an elevator with a scary guy with an eye patch waiting for the doors to open into my new life I was far from excited, nervous is a much better way of describing what I felt.

The mint condition doors opened into a clean gym with various sized rooms spanning out left and right. Half on the equipment seemed too expensive to touch, while the other half looked to unstable. Eye patch man (he called himself Director Fury) waved two fingers in the direction of a room, showing me where to go. Following him I walked at a quick pace behind him. Standing outside the door I paused for a moment and took a deep breath in. I needed to make a good impression of myself if I wanted to survive in this place, I was going to live with these people.

"Team, Meet Annabelle Rye. This young woman is the new member to your group."

All the heads in the room turned. Some seemed surprised, while others looked on in slight annoyance. Stepping forward I cleared my throat and spoke in a steady and passive tone “Hello, nice to meet you all. As Director Fury said my Name is Annabelle, although you can call me Annie if you want.”

The room went silent for a second before a strong masculine voice broke the increasing tension “Welcome to my Tower Annie, I’m Tony.” I turned my head to the direction of the voice to be greeted by a short brown haired man with a smug look on his face. Striding forward he continued as he pointed to various people.

“This here is Dr. Banner a.k.a giant greet rage monster”
“yeh, hi there, you can call me Bruce”
“Then we have agent Natasha Romanoff and agent Clint Barton. Don’t take their inability to speak more than a few words towards you, they are pretty private”
“I can hear every word your saying Stark, shut your mouth before I do”
“And then we have Thor, who is off having fun in his home on Asgard. That just leaves Steve Rodgers”
“Morning Ma’am”
(Director Fury) “Ok, now that everyone is happy family, I’m going to leave Miss Rye here with you guys, and remember play nice”
Play nice? What was that supposed to mean. Turning back to the group I sat down on the bench and for the first time got a good look at the place. I was not your average room. It a huge room, half the size of a football field. It was mostly white and the floors were soft. Then I realized, it was a training room.

Natasha and Clint went straight back to training, throwing kicks and punches at a speed that made their hands and legs turn to a fuzz. They seemed like nice people, just a bit quiet and solitary. Bruce picked up some files by his side at started scanning though them. After a minute or two he called tony over, who then left the room with Bruce.
Standing their awkwardly I looked around to room to see if there was any possibility of conversation, or at least to try not sticking out to much when I saw Steve picking up dumbbells. Rocking on the heels of my feet; making it look like I was trying to get momentum in my step, I walked over to Steve and took a deep breath (it was now or nothing)

“Hi Steve, wait can I call you Steve yet or do we need to know each other for a certain amount of time to get that far?”
“No, Steve is fine”
Putting out his hand in front, I shook it
“No need to be nervous, Tony has a habit of making everyone sound worse than they are. It’s hard living with him at first, but you will get used to it, all it takes is a few good come backs and he’ll be much more subdued”
“I hope so. Is it ok if I ask you a favor? I haven’t been to my room yet, and I think Tony was supposed to take me but he ran off with the other guy… Bruce”

“No need to worry ma’am, Tony and Bruce often run off to one of the labs here to blow up stuff. What level are you on?”
“Level 29”
“Ok, follow me this way ma’am”
“I meant it when I said you could call me Annie, we are going to be spending a lot more time together, if I get to use your first name, you get to use mine”
“As you wish Annie”

I smiled at him and then started walking. He seemed like a great guy, though the way he spoke seemed out of date. I don’t know too much about anyone here apart from what Fury told me, which was basically the important names, their ‘superhero’ name, and their importance in S.H.I.E.L.D

We got into the clean elevator, Steve pushed one of the buttons on the elevator, causing it to close its doors. After a what felt like a lifetime of horrible elevator music, a ding sounded and the doors opened up to reveal a city view apartment.

“There are nearly 20 floor levels of apartments. There is a list by the telephone of food ordering, but all of the team eats most nights together in the dining room, which is on level 35. If you need help with the Television box, don’t call me, sadly technology and I aren’t on the same…. Time frame. But if you do need any other help I am on level 27. See you at 7:00 dinner?”
“Sure, see you then”

Looking around the room, I just had time to see Steve give a nod before the doors closed. Dropping onto the closest couch I let my body relax. I didn’t know what the future would bring. It all seemed like a polished place with polished people to make their cracks of trauma and scars seem not as deep. All I knew is it would take a while to get used to this place, and its people.
