Never Saw it Comin'

My eyes are wide open.

Everyone leaves the room, leaving me there in silence. I sit in a chair, staring at the open folder in front of me. Picture evidence of what Jack did, lays out in front of me; mocking me.

“You know, I was against sending you in.” A voice says behind me. I turn around and see Uncle Bucky standing there, “So were your parents; they didn’t want you to know about Jack’s exploits.”

“I would have found out eventually.” I mutter as he sits down next to me, “I still can’t wrap my head around this. Jack was never the violent type. His greatest fear was turning into a Winter Soldier 2.0; did you know that?”

“Better than most.” He mutters before his eyes fell upon the pictures on the table, “He would constantly remind me what I was; he acted like I had a choice.”

“You didn’t have a choice; Russians programmed you to be this killing machine.” I assure him, “I remember Dad telling me all these stories you told him; it’s amazing how you didn’t snap when your memories came back. That fact alone always made me proud to call you my godfather.” A smile creeps onto his lips. “Do you think Jack is doing this on his own free will or do you think he’s being brainwashed?”

“That’s why they’re sending you in; you’re the only one that knows how his mind works.” He tells me, “You’re going to be able to tell the difference; you said it yourself, you know Jack.”

“I don’t want to kill him.” I whimper as tears flow from my eyes; taking my black mascara with them as they slide down my face. “I can’t kill him, Uncle Bucky. He’s my best friend; we’ve been through hell and back with each other. I can’t just aim a gun and shoot to kill; not this time.”

Uncle Bucky leans across and pulls me into a tight hug, rubbing my back soothingly like he did whenever I got in a fight with either parent. “You don’t have to kill him, Helena. Techinally your not an agent anymore.” With that I pull away, looking at him with a confused expression. “You heard them, technically you’re no longer an agent. You’re basically doing this freelance.”

“I get what you’re saying; you want me to try and get Jack back.” I smile, “You want me to turn against my orders to get my best friend back alive.”

“I don’t think he’s doing this for the thrill of it; there is something behind all of this and I want you to find out what it is.” He informs me, “I want you to find out what my son has been up to the last two years.”

“What if what I find isn’t what we want to known; what if he’s really behind this?” I ask.

“Then and only then do exactly what you’re suppose to.” He sternly says as he gets up out of his chair, “That’s when you kill him.”

**

That’s when you kill him., rings through my mind when I walk up to the jets with my father and mother. The walk is quiet so my talk with Uncle Bucky repeats in my mind like a broken record. I never heard his voice so harsh, so cold. It’s like he’s almost ashamed of what his son has done; I guess I would be too especially if I tried my damnedest to bring them up right.

I look at the jet then back at both of my parents; they are hard to read. I’m not sure if they’re happy about this or not, “You know you don’t have to do this.” My mom says, breaking the silence. “I’m sure Fury can find another agent to do this, Helena.”

“I’ve got to do this; I’m the only one that knows Jack better than anyone else.” I tell her, “I’m going to be fine, don’t worry about me.”

“You’re our daughter, we’re always going to worry about you.” Dad says before pulling me into a hug, “Please stay safe and come home to us.” He murmurs into my hair.

I push myself away before standing on my tip toes, kissing his cheek. “I’m going to be fine; I’m the offspring of Captain America and Agent 13, I’ve got skill in my blood.” I joke, causing a smirk to appear on both of their lips. “I’m going to be fine guys, think of it as me being on vacation. I’ll be back before either of you miss me.” I blow them a kiss goodbye before getting onto the jet; it’s time to start this mission…

This is sooo good! I love the complexity and the angst that you've already brought to the story. I can't wait to read more!
