Never Saw it Comin'

I have no use for apologies

Helena

“What did your parents say when you quit SHIELD and became a traveller?” Jack asks as we sit in my warm apartment, “They didn’t like the idea, did they?”

“You know the answer to that.” I chuckle as I grip my coffee mug firmly in my hand, “Your dad is the one that talked them into letting me go. He said that I’m 20 years old, I can do whatever I please.” Jack frowns at the mention of his dad, “I wish you would tell me what the fight was about, maybe I can understand why you fled without even telling your best friend goodbye.”

“You still know how to make a guy for guilty, huh?” He bitterly says followed by a humorless chuckle, “Still think I’m this innocent guy that could do no wrong.”

I bite my lower lip lightly before placing my mug on the coffee table. Jack looks at me with darkness in his eyes, “You’re never going to be that kid again, you’ve seen the horrors of the world; you’re jaded, I get it. But I promised you no matter what, I’ll stay by your side. Forever, Barnes, forever. The least thing you can do is tell me what’s going on? What snapped in your head that night? Was it really so bad that you had to leave?”

“If I told you, you wouldn’t look at me the same.” He sighs, causing a sigh to escape my lips as well.

“You’re really underestimating forever, aren’t you?” I ask with a smirk on my lips, “Nothing you say can or will surprise me.”

“I wouldn’t want to be the one that tainted Captain America’s daughter’s view on the world.” Jack informs me.

“I’m was a SHIELD agent, I’m no longer that innocent blonde haired girl you had to protect.” I sternly say, “I don’t need protection, I need answers. I’ve spent the last two years wondering if my best friend was dead, you can atleast tell me why you left.”

“It’s not the simple, Helena.” He says, muscles tensing and his hands forming into a fist. He was anger. “I wish I could share this with you, trust me I do. This is beyond me. What I do for a living now, could kill you. I left to protect my family; to protect you.”

I take his hands in mine and look deep into his blue eyes, “Jack, you don’t have to protect me. I was a highly trained agent, nothing can get pass me.”

“You’re wrong about this, Helena.” He counters, sounding scared. “This is higher than us; higher than Captain America and Winter Soldier.”

“Is someone after you?” I ask, “Jack, please tell me what I can do to help you. You’re my best friend.”

“I made a deal with the devil, Hells.” He tells me, “No one can save me now.”

Later that night, after Jack left, I call up Uncle Bucky; not caring what time it is in New York. After three rings, he finally picks up, “Do you have any idea what time it is over here?”

“If this was another time, I would care but I’m sorry but I don’t care; you need to hear this.” I tell him.

“Fine, what’s up kid?” He asks before a yawn escapes his lips.

“I spoke to Jack today; he’s fine for the most part.” I inform him, “But something isn’t right. Someone is blackmailing him or is after him, he’s not his usual happy self.”

“You think he did all those murders because of someone else?” He asks, a tinge of hope is hidden in the words.

“Uncle Bucky, he’s truly scared of something. He said he sold his soul to the devil and that whoever is doing this is above Captain America and Winter Soldier. Who could possibly be over you and Dad?”

“Have you told anyone in SHIELD about this?” He asks, dreading the answer.

“You’re the first person I called after Jack left.” I reply, “Plus if I come in contact with anyone in SHIELD save you, Dad and Mom; it would blow my cover.”

“So I guess it’s up to me to do the digging, huh?” He asks followed by a humorless chuckle; the same humorless chuckle Jack has.

“It’s up to you Uncle Bucky; I can only do so much without getting caught.” I sigh.

“He doesn’t suspect a thing, does he?”

“I hope not…”

Jack

I stand in my boss’s office, his back turned to me. But I can see the redness of his face through the reflection in the mirror.

“The girl isn’t going to be a problem, is she Barnes?” He asks with a harshness in his voice.

“Helena isn’t a problem; she’s not even a SHIELD agent anymore.” I inform him, “I’ve had someone hack into SHIELD’s system, she’s not even on the list as an inactive agent; she really and truly quit.”

I could faintly see a smirk form on his lips, “Then she could possibly be use to us after all.”

“She won’t turn her back on her family.” I inform him, “She’s Captain America’s daughter for fuck’s sake. She bleeds righteousness.”

“But she’ll do anything for you, wouldn’t she?” He asks, turning around to look at me. “She’ll change sides if you ask her, wouldn’t she?”

“I wouldn’t ask her to do that; she’s got a heart of gold. I’d hate to see her heart turn as black as mine.”

“You know if you don’t do as I say, she’ll die.” The smirk on his lips never wavered. “Get me the girl, Jack. No one will ever suspect the daughter of Captain America would turn to the dark side…”

This is sooo good! I love the complexity and the angst that you've already brought to the story. I can't wait to read more!
