The House in the Field

I Taught Her Well

“I just don’t understand it.” Sam started, “If she had the strength to get her hand out and get her heart out how come she couldn’t use her strength to escape, or her Wanda powers?” He questioned as he paced the room. “Why can’t she take control of his mind to stop him?” He shook his head, fist slamming down on the table causing Wanda to jump. It didn’t matter how many times they went through this sort of situation it never got easier for the soldiers to lose one of their own.
“Sam, you know she wouldn’t do that to him. It wouldn’t make her any better than them if she did that to him. It took all of us to get us out of that room she wouldn’t have been able to do that on her own, she saw the situation heading south and she dealt with it.” Steve tried to reason with him but he was having none of it.
“Our next issue is what do we tell Super Soldier out there?” Tony spoke nodding in the direction of Bucky’s room. “We can’t exactly rock up and tell him he killed his wife can we?” He threw the obvious out.
“She got caught in the crossfire.” Wanda spoke, biting her lip as she thought about Pietro. “He doesn’t need the guilt on top of the loss.” She spoke with her head dipped. Her heart felt for the assassin, she knew exactly how he was feeling; powerless and hurt. All eyes turned to her as Sam placed a gentle hand on her shoulder as his way of support. “We should arrange a funeral for her, for closure.” Wanda added as Steve looked away. Up until now he hadn’t told the others about her wishes, not sure how they would react that he knew this was the outcome.
“She didn’t want that.” Steve spoke after the room fell silent, it was his turn to have the uncomfortable stares on him. Walking over to one of the draws he pulled out the note that she’d left on his pillow, throwing it down in the centre of the table sighing. “She knew this was going to happen, she told me he’d choose and that he’d mastered the heart pull technique. I told her it wouldn’t happen, but, she made me promise two things. Bucky didn’t see her body, and, Stark got her body. She said you’d been working on finding a cure for the serum and you could continue to do so.” The Captain paused biting his lip as he came clean about everything. “If I’d had believed her this could have been so different.” He started but was cut off by Tony standing up and walking over to the same draw pulling out a USB stick and attaching it to system.

“When she first started working here, I’d just come clean about being Iron Man so naturally I was cautious.” He started, “I did a comprehensive and intrusive background check, I knew who she was from the start and I knew about her powers.” He bit his lip flicking the screen. “She wasn’t HYDRA, she wasn’t a threat, she was a casualty. When Bucky was taken and came back at the café, his serum wasn’t complete, but, a member of SHIELD had seen enough to know that they were close. Ava had seen him too and she came knocking on their door with questions. They,” He paused shaking his head, “My dad saw an opportunity and he took it. He told her he could help James if she was willing to help them. He knew about her powers, SHIELD had her on file since she was born, so he trialled the early stages of your serum on her. Instead of your healing factor and your physical strength it heightened her mutations. She always had the ability to remove a heart, to speed the pace, to replicate and such but now she could manipulate objects, remove memories and warp minds. She literally had head and heart.” He shrugged. “She couldn’t really remember what had happened so suggestions were made to her that she was taken from the street and injected. When she started here she knew my dad had worked on your serum and she asked if I could try and find a way to reverse it. I had been trying for many years because I hated you, but nothing ever came of it.” He paused letting everything sink in for everyone, “She told me about Bucky and how she’d studied everything about him. She was determined to get him back. I taught her basic mechanical work and she was already a whiz on the computer. I wanted to put right what my dad had done wrong for her.” Tony mumbled, flopping down in the chair rubbing his face with his hands. It was the first time Steve had seen him be so simple. There was none of the usual jokes, or drama, it was just honesty and pain.
“Captain, Sargent Barnes is awake and seems extremely distressed.” Friday spoke out as everyone look to the leader for their next move.
“I can handle this.” Steve spoke standing,

He saw Bucky sitting in the corner of the room holding his head tightly in his hands, sweat visible on his skin as he rocked slightly. “I killed her Steve.” Was the first thing he said to his best friend.
“No you didn’t Bucky, this wasn’t you’re doing.” Steve tried to reason with him, but it fell on deaf ears.
“I took her heart and I squeezed it. How is that not my doing?” Bucky asked, staring up at Steve expectantly. Steve realised there was nothing more he could say to help Bucky move on from that.
“You should come into the meeting room the rest of us are there.” Steve said softly as Bucky made no attempt to move apart to shake his head.
“I don’t want to be around anybody.” Bucky whispered, “I want to see her.” He looked over at Steve who sighed heavily.
“That’s not a good idea Buck.” He shook his head, “your emotional and distressed it won’t end well or achieve anything.”
“She’s my wife, I need to see her Steve even if it’s through glass I need to see her.” He whispered brokenly, a sob escaping.
“Maybe later.” Steve lied to his best friend who was too hurt to notice.
“Make sure her feet aren’t covered up, she could never sleep with her feet covered.” He mumbled looking away. Steve glanced down at his broken best friend before he left the room, knowing he needed to be alone and that they needed a plan.
“Where’s Stark?” He asked as he re-entered the room looking round to see the genius missing.
“He said he’s going to get to work straight away so that she can have a proper send off quickly.” Sam looked over at the Captain. “How is he?”
“Broken. He wants to see her.” Steve informed them.

Tony hadn’t been in the lab for that long when he noticed something odd. The USB chip she used to download the data was accompanied by another one. Frowning at why she’d need two Tony carefully unclipped them both before connecting them to his computer, the first one was as expected the HYDRA data and files. The second one took some time to load on to his computer but when it did he saw a video with his surname as the title. With a flick of his phone the video was being projected into mid-air as he saw her pop up.
“Stark, you are the only person I know I could trust when it came to this.” She started before laughing at the fact that he was the best person to think about. “My hearts been ripped out but it needs to be put back in. Not the heart that was crushed, my actual heart. I saw it how it ended, James being made to choose; I saw Steve and I’s fate. When he was training me and I grabbed his hand to help myself up there was a connection and I saw it. So doing what you taught me I took precautions. Just because I saw I died didn’t mean to say it was definitely going to go like that so I took Steve’s heart too, I wiped his mind so he wouldn’t remember and then we met again and that’s the story he can remember. I’ve stored the hearts in your vault, yeah you need to improve Friday’s security, but now you need to put them back. Start with me, I mean I am dead so if you fail then you won’t be killing anyone. I come back I can do Steve.” She looked to the side when she heard a noise come from outside her room. “I think James is coming back. Look get the hearts, cut my chest and put it back. You should find it easy there’s a big gap that needs to be filled. My body will do the rest. Hurry up though before the serum wears off and I don’t heal.” She cut off the camera just before James walked back in.
“Stark you find something?” Steve’s voice rang out as he walked through the door. Spinning on his chair to face the Captain, a pale look on his face he nodded slowly.
“It’s not nice or pretty, but, I taught her well.” Stark looked a little shocked by whatever it was he found.
“Then what is it?” Steve asked as he noticed her feet covered up by the sheet, remembering what Bucky said he gently moved it away before turning his attention to Stark and noticing the screen behind him with Ava’s face on the video.
“I can get her back.”
