The House in the Field

I'm a Barnes

“I’m not sure this is a good idea.” Ava spoke out quietly, the music loud but the voices of people louder. “James I can’t do this.” She whispered pulling on his flesh hand causing them to stop following the rest of the group towards the doors.
“Ava what is it?” He looked down at her too see the fear in her eyes as she shook her head, chewing on her lip with intensity.
“I can’t go out there.” She shook her head. “Everyone knows who you are, they’ll be photographing you and if I’m stood there then they’ll get to know me. They’ll start digging, they’ll drag up my past. James I can’t go out there. I can’t have everyone knowing I’m a freak.” She whispered hurriedly before her breath left her in quick takes. She could feel herself getting dizzy from the lack of oxygen that her body was getting, she felt her whole body clam up and her palms get sweaty. She dropped his hand leaning against the wall, her head in her hands as she tried to breath normally; but failing.
“Ava you’re not a freak. Listen to me doll,” he started but knew she wasn’t paying attention. “Doll follow my voice, come back to me,” He whispered trying the techniques she used on him all those times, he bent his knees so that he was in her eye line smiling up at her. “You are not a freak. How many people have you saved? Hm? The world should know about you.” He tried to reason with her as she shook her head. “Listen, I never got to show you off before the war, I don’t want to go out there alone and have to watch you from a distance all night like we used to. We’re married Ava and I want the world to know that. I want the world to know who you are and how amazing you are.” He lifted her chin slightly when his knees couldn’t take the pressure anymore. “I’ve got you.” He leaned forward kissing her cheek softly.
“Lovebirds cut it out! We’re supposed to be walking out together!” Tony shouted as Bucky eyed his wife.
“If you honestly don’t want to go out there, we can turn round and get in the car and go back. But, we can’t run and hide forever Ava. This day will come again and again and again.” He told her truthfully as she took a deep breath, starting to feel like herself a little more. She reach forward snaking her hand over his chest and to the inside jacket pocket she knew he kept his stash. Pulling the flask out that she knew he always carried she screwed the top off quickly before taking a big gulp of the liquid that burns.
“I wish I could get drunk right now.” She whispered to him kissing him softly on the lips before taking his hand and walking towards the rest of them as the doors opened.

“There is still a lot of people who believe that the Winter Soldier should still be prosecuted for the crimes he has committed, that it is an injustice to those he hurt or killed, what do you say to that Captain?” The reported asked Steve as they all stood in the press area. The gala was to raise funds for those who have been effected by the tragedies of the world, and others. That meant that it was heavily loaded with press, with people and politicians. It had been several months since Ava had been injected and both she and Bucky had been part of several missions that had continued to help maintain the stability of society.
“What I would say is, if James Barnes was to be prosecuted for crimes which he did not willingly commit then would that not be an injustice? Trust me when I tell you that there is not a day that goes by where he does not feel the weight of what he was forced to do, but, during those days he’s out protecting our citizen’s lives and rights from the threats that forced their will upon him. Not everybody will agree with what we do or the idea of the Avengers; but that doesn’t mean we should give up.” Steve spoke so passionately as he glanced in the direction of his best friend and Ava who were looking completely uncomfortable and heading in the direction of a shark of on interviewer. “Thanks.” Steve spoke politely shaking the lady’s hand cutting short the interview and heading casually quick towards the couple. “Heads up the interviewer you’re heading towards is a right piece of work.” Steve spoke standing to the side of Bucky as they all posed for an uncomfortable picture. “I’ll stay with you.” Steve mumbled as they all headed into that direction.

“I’m joined here by Steve Rodgers, James Barnes and” he paused looking over at Ava.
“Ava Barnes.” Steve spoke taking the attention away from Ava, who tapped his back as a thank you.
“Barnes? Are you both related?” The interview turned his attention back to Ava, who stared at him.
“We’re married.” She smiled looking up at Bucky when she felt his grip tighten on her hip.
“In that case allow me to start this interview with you. How does it feel to know your husbands a murderer? Are you not scared that one day he will turn on you?” The interviewer looked at her, his smirk hidden from the camera but not from Ava. Steve opened his mouth to say something but instantly shut it when Ava started to talk.
“You think him a murderer? Tell me,” she glanced at his press pass, “Laurence how many times have you put your life on the line for this country?” She asked raising her eyebrows at him as he stuttered. “James Barnes did so countless times, back in the war and especially now. It’s insulting how judgemental and ignorant you are of not only James’ contribution to the stability of this country’s security but to the Avengers as a whole. How many times have you reported on the number of lives saved by the Avengers or the number of security threats detected thanks to advanced technology provided by those very people?” She raised her eyebrow at him with a questioning glance. “How many times have you had your mind taken away to the point where you can’t remember how to speak, eat or even breath? Where all you know is torture and missions?” She didn’t give him chance to speak. “Your attitude to those different, be it born with, enforced upon or developed, is arrogant and dangerous. There is kids and adults out there who are different from their society and persecuting those in the public eye who are too is not the way to help them. In a world where they already feel unsafe and different and like a freak the last thing they need is for your cheap, dirty tricks to tarnish an organisation set out to help, to stir controversy in opinions so that they are pushed further outside of acceptance. So no I don’t think my husband as a murderer. I think of him as a decent upstanding human being who was used in such a manner inconceivable to those with such limited minds. As for being scared of him? The only thing that scares me is when the day comes that James Barnes and the Avengers are no longer here to protect us. Let’s see you report about that.” She stared at him with sheer determination.
“We should go guys.” He told his team causing the camera guy lowered the lens from the trio. Ava never took her eyes off him until he’d disappeared through the sea of people. She waited until he was gone before letting out the breath she had held in. She glanced slowly to the side of her where both of the boys were staring down at her.
“I thought you weren’t a team player?” Steve asked with a small smile on his lips. “Because that sure sounded like you were.” He looked at her, his smile getting bigger.
“I’m not. I’m a Barnes.” She looked up at Bucky with a smile.
