The House in the Field

Seven

“Hey Bruce.” The doctor heard whilst he was tinkering with some figures on the computer screen in front of him.
“Uh hey Ava. Tony’s not here. He’s with the rest of the team dealing with all the HYDRA agents you’ve all been collecting.” He smiled looking at her over his shoulder. She was wearing one of Bucky’s massive jumpers and leant against the door frame chewing on her lip.
“I know, that’s why I’m here. Can I ask you something?” She asked nervously, Bruce had never seen this side of her. They’d both got pretty close since she came to the headquarters, both working on finding out what was in the serum and more importantly how to reverse it. But, here she stood now; her hands ringing in nerves, her lip on verge of bleeding she was biting it so hard and heart pounding a mile a minute.
“Sure. Is everything ok?” The Doctor asked, sliding his glasses off and pushing off the desk so he moved further away from the screen.
“Yeah, yeah everything’s fine.” She spoke unconvincingly. “Mind if I sit?” She asked nodding to the chair Tony normally occupied as Bruce leaned over to pull it out for her. Taking the seat, she was silent, trying to figure out the best way to ask. “So I know you and Helen have been examining my bloods and the serum, I just wondering what you’d found out.” She looked over at him hopeful she wouldn’t have to elaborate.
He studied her for a moment, he’d somewhat become on expert on people’s body language and tones, and he knew she had a specific question. “Ava, everything we’ve discovered so far I’ve told you.” He sighed scooting closer to her as she bit her lip. “You can trust me. Whatever it is your trying not to ask, you can ask me.” He smiled placing his hand on her shoulder softly as she nodded, wiping her eyes from the stray tear that had fell.
“How does the serum effect my ability to,” She paused, looking away. “My ability to have children?” She whispered out quietly. Bruce looked at her for what felt like forever as he tried to keep the surprise off his face.
“Well from the scans we did and the tests we did, your still producing eggs right?” She nodded not looking at him. “Your womb looks intact, the issue would be the healing factor but if that should ever happen we monitor it, they’ll be a spike in your blood count if it was to ever impact on it. The healing factor is there to assist natural healing; your body still functions like any other. Meaning if you were to get pregnant then your body would still accept the baby. When you give birth you might need an operation or more help but so do most women now.” He looked over at her as she bit her lip pulling the sleeve over her hands to keep her secrets in. “Would you like me to start that monitoring?” He asked quietly as her eyes snapped up to his quickly, tears spilling faster than they could be produced. “Hold that thought.” Bruce told her as the door opened.
“Wow they are assholes.” Tony’s voice rang out as he walked straight into the office. Ava quickly wiped her eyes as Bruce looked over at Tony.
“Didn’t go well then?” He asked, trying to gain a little time for Ava to sort herself out.
“No. They wouldn’t give us any information. Steve wouldn’t let the little witch on them to find out their plans so now we’re no better off but have a handful of people to have to babysit.” He sighed, walking over to his desk and going to grab his chair only turning and noticing Ava’s back when he couldn’t feel it.
“Ava?” He asked as she span around looking up at him.
“I got bored so I came and mithered Bruce.” She shrugged. “I’ve finished your new interface for you. Just got to load her up and she should be good to go.” She smiled sliding the chip on his desk before making her way over to the door. She knew Tony had noticed her tear stained face so she knew she needed to get out of there.
“Have you been” He started.
“Is my husband back then? I’ve just thought of another Disney film I’ve not shown him.” She smiled before allowing the door to close quickly, her ‘thanks Bruce’ just sneaking in.
“Is she alright?” Tony turned to ask his friend who just nodded going back to typing his figures.

Ava walked into the kitchen deciding she needed a coffee and some food and to find Bucky. She knew now that Bruce knew it would only be a matter of time before everyone else knew. She wasn’t saying Bruce would tell anybody, god no she knew her secret was safe with him, but, all it would take is for his thoughts to be louder than normal and Wanda to pick up on that. It had to be today. The kitchen was empty and she set about making her drink, trying to tune into Bucky’s heartbeat to see where he was, frowning when she couldn’t pick it up. “Hey, is there enough in there for another?” Sam’s voice rang out as she spun around quickly to look at him with a questioning glance. “Enough coffee in the pot?” He asked nodding to the object she was holding.
“Oh yeah sorry.” She shook her head, not noticing his frown as he walked to the side of her. “Where’s Bucky do you know?” She asked glancing at him before going back to stirring.
“Yeah he headed out with Steve. We needed food or something, I think they’re planning a meal you know family style?” He asked as she nodded her head.
“Oh great, if he comes back tell him I’ve gone for a nap?” She smiled walking out of the kitchen and to the room she shared with the assassin. She knew she wouldn’t be able to sleep, her mind to focused on how she was going to tell him the news. She remembered back to when he used to come round her house in the middle of the night and they’d talk. They were both lay on the wooden floor of the front room, legs sticking out in opposite directions as just their heads were level with each other.
“We’re going to have seven. One for each day of the week to look after us when we’re old.” He smiled over at her as she laughed shaking her head.
“I won’t need seven. I’ll have you.” She laughed. “You can feed me, and put me to bed and wipe my ass when I can’t.” She smirked as he leaned forward kissing you.
“But enforcing that on those who we created will be so much more fun.” He whispered.

When he had become MIA, Ava always thought that this time would never come. Her and Bucky would never get to have one much less seven, but now the time has come and she wasn’t sure she wanted it anymore. They were both very different people than they were 70 years ago, the guilt Bucky was racked with every day and strength Ava gained every day meant they weren’t ideal candidates. They’d both done things they were proud of and their career paths didn’t exactly scream best parents did it? The more she thought about what would be good about it the more the negative grew, if she wasn’t sure how was she supposed to reassure Bucky? She stared at the ceiling hoping to find the answers on the pure white wall, her hand resting on her belly until she finally did fall asleep.

“Bucky, can I speak to you for a minute? In private?” Ava asked once Sam had left the kitchen. She looked over at him hopefully whilst setting the places for the rest of the team.
“Sure, what’s wrong?” He asked concern etching on his face as he came round to her side of the table taking the cutlery out of her hands and placing it down on the table, his hands going straight to her hips.
“I think we should leave the Avengers.” She breathed out opening her mouth to give him the perfect reason to snapping it shut instantly when the chatter of everyone filled the room. Bucky didn’t miss the close of her eyes and the fall of hope in her face.
“Shut up!” He shouted to them all with harshness, turning his attention back to Ava.
“Guys don’t do this here.” Bruce spoke up, everyone’s eyes watching them.
“Why? Ava this is our family.” He spoke, letting his hands drop from her hip as he motioned to them all.
“Really guys not the place.” Bruce spoke quieter this time as Tony gave him a glance.
“In my own family I never felt like I belonged. Here with you, with the team I feel like I do. I’m accepted and I can better the world that I helped to create the fear in.” He told her, his face pleading.
“Because we’re going to have another family! One that actually needs our help! One that isn’t worth the risk of going out there day in and day out! James we are one into the seven!” Her eyes flooding, her voice broken and her heart racing. She grabbed his hand placing it on her stomach as she stared up at him. “James we’re having a baby.” She whispered to the shocked soldier. She waited for what felt like eternity for him to acknowledge what she had just said. The Avengers staying deadly silent as they watched the scene unfold from wide eyes. “Say something, anything please.” She whispered desperately.
“I love you.” He whispered.
