The House in the Field

Date

“I don’t think this is going to work.” Wanda’s worried voice came out from behind the very pregnant Ava.
“Trust me it’ll work.” She smiled over at the nervous youngster. “Besides if they see you I can provide a distraction for you.” She winked as Wanda offered her a questioning glance. “I’m pregnant I can pee on command.” She laughed walking into the kitchen where everyone was sat around chatting. Ava gave Wanda a final wink walking over to her husband who quickly stood up so she could have his seat leaning down to kiss her gently. “Hey you.” Ava smiled up at, Wanda quickly walked through the kitchen carefully trying not to draw attention to herself.
“Where you going Wanda?” Bucky asked turning his attention from the now glaring Ava and to the youngest member of the team who had just got to the door. She froze, turning on her heels to look over at everyone’s staring eyes.
“She’ going out for me.” Ava shrugged taking a sip of the tea in front of her.
“Why? What for?” Bucky asked, confused as to why she didn’t tell him she needed something.
“Because since you announced I was your wife people are looking for a photo. I’m clearly pregnant and my clothes don’t fit. And no offence, but, you don’t exactly scream fashionable.” Ava shrugged like the lie was nothing. “And before you ask about me asking Natasha to go, all she would come back with is something black and tight and this isn’t the kind of body for black and tight.” She laughed over as Natasha, who quickly realised what was happening, scowled at her.
“But on her own?” Steve asked glancing back at the witch whose hand hadn’t left the handle.
“She can move things with her mind, I’m pretty sure she can manage self-defence.” Natasha weighed in this time, Ava raising her hand in agreement. “She’s a kid who wants to go shopping leave her be!” She added pointing her finger and walking over to the young girl but not before grabbing the car keys tony had in his back pocket.
“We want you back in an hour!” Tony shouted as all three girls walked out of the room down to the garage.
“So where are you really going?” Natasha asked once they were out of earshot from the guys.
“She’s got a date!” Ava squealed excitedly as Wanda blushed.
“Shut up they’ll hear!” Wanda slapped Ava’s arm gently.
“Sorry. Have a good time if you need us to come get you ring us. And if you’re staying out text me ok?” She laughed giving her a quick hug, Natasha doing the same.

“Ok I’ll be back soon.” Steve told the group who had sat around ready for film night. Wanda still wasn’t back and now Steve too was leaving the group.
“Hopefully not too soon.” Sam spoke his head leaning over the back of the sofa to look up at the Captain. “Remember what we talked about.” He turned his attention back to the screen that the DVD menu was loaded up on.
“Say hi to Sharon for us.” Natasha piped earning herself a high five from Ava who had scoffed as much popcorn into her mouth that she could manage.
“Remember to enjoy it. And breath.” Bucky told him as he left through the door. He quickly got in the car that Tony agreed he could use and drove to the address Sharon had provided him. She looked stunning in her navy body con dress and black shoes and for a moment the great Steve Rodgers forgot where he was.
“You look amazing.” He laughed at the cliché response as Sharon smiled clipping in her seatbelt and looking him over finally.
“I could say the same.” She smiled, the Captain had gone with black slacks and a white shirt that showed off his toned chest and arms perfectly. “So where are we heading?” She asked looking straight ahead with curiosity once Steve had recovered and set off.
“I’ve made a reservation at an Italian in town that Sam recommended.” He smiled over at her, “is that ok?” He hated how nervous he was, he had fought wars and aliens and HYDRA and yet here he was sweating over whether a woman liked Italian food.
“Italian is my favourite.” She smiled over at him. They pulled up shortly after and the matradee quickly showed them to their seats to avoid attention being brought to them. They had been seated in a quiet corner of the restaurant where prying eyes were limited. The young waitress poured water for them and left them to decide on what they wanted to eat. “So is this what you used to do back when you were younger?” Sharon asked looking at him from over the menu as he laughed shaking his head.
“Definitely not. The only time I ever took a girl out was when Bucky tricked me into going on a double date. He was the one who had the attention.” He laughed skimming over the menu deciding on lasagne. “Besides in my time we went to dancehalls and cinemas.” He laughed as he remembered his past life. They ordered their food and despite his nerves the Captain managed to keep the conversation flowing. He told her stories from his past; about his missions and what life was like in general. Sharon told him about growing up and pretending to be a SHIELD agent just like her aunt, how many times she pretended to save the Captain when she was young. The food arrived meaning that the laughing and stories died down a little whilst they started to tuck into the impressive food. It was at this moment that Steve heard a familiar laugh come from further down the seated area, he frowned slightly as he looked to the side of Sharon’s head to get a glance of the source.
“Everything ok?” She asked, wiping her mouth gently with the napkin to ensure no sauce was around her mouth.
“That’s Wanda.” He whispered not being able to see her company. “She went out before and Ava and Natasha told us she was going shopping.” He looked shocked as a smile spread on Sharon’s face.
“You are like the protective older brother right now. She’s on a date.” She laughed taking a sip of her wine watching Steve as he stared at the back of the unknown male’s head. “She snuck out past Captain America, unbelievable. I’d say you’re slipping Rodgers.” She laughed looking at him noticing him shaking his head laughing.

“Oops I did it again, I played with your heart” Ava sang out as she danced her way into the kitchen. It was 4 am and she couldn’t sleep. The baby was kicking, punching and elbowing it’s way out of a paper bag Ava felt, she’d been lay listening to the soft snores coming from her husband for about an hour and short of putting a pillow over his face out of jealousy this was her next idea. Since finding out she was pregnant Bucky made it his mission to read everything possible on pregnancy and what she could do and more importantly couldn’t do. He’d read somewhere that she couldn’t drink coffee and every time she went to make a mug he’d know, so she had decided to take advantage of his sleeping state and make herself the one thing she missed. She carried on singing the Britney Spears’ classic 90s hit until she realised she wasn’t alone. She span around sheepishly to see the blonde agent sat at the breakfast bar, eyebrow raised along with the mug to her lips. Ava didn’t need to see her lips to know she was smiling behind the white mug, her eyes crinkling at the side gave that away. “I’d really appreciate it if no one found out about that.” Ava bit her lip smiling, Steve brought a girl home!
“About what? The bad taste in music, the dancing or the coffee?” She asked as Ava laughed grabbing the coffee mug.
“All three please. He’s driving me insane with the can and cannot have.” She laughed rolling her eyes and taking the seat opposite her. “How come your up at this time?” She asked her once she’d got comfortable.
“I’ve always got up at this time since joining the agency.” She shrugged, “It seemed unfair to wake Steve up so I figured he wouldn’t mind.” She smiled a little.
“How was your date?” Ava smiled when she noticed the agent blush.
“It was perfect.” She smiled. They both exchanged stories; hers of last night and Ava’s of years ago, losing track of time as they laughed along with each other. “He’s just so nervous though. You don’t expect that of Captain America.” She sighed shrugging.
“It was his first date in like 70 plus years, James said he never dated really before that. I’d say you were like the second woman he’s dated.” She laughed. “And he really likes you. I mean it’s embarrassingly really.” Ava smiled placing her nearly empty mug on the marble as Sharon snatched it away causing Ava to look at her with confusion.

“There you are doll, what you doing up so early?” Bucky’s tired voice came from the door as Ava glanced up at Sharon thanking her silently, Sharon just winking her welcome.
