The House in the Field

Variation

“You know they have people who could be keeping watch whilst you rest.” Wanda spoke as she leaned at the side of the door, looking over at the young female who was intently staring at the screen. Sighing when she realised she wasn’t going to get an answer, she walked further into the room and dropped down into the chair at the side of Ava looking at the same screen she was.
“Steve sent you in here?” Ava asked quietly, as though she would interrupt the computers work.
“No. I’m not here to get in your head either.” Wanda told her truthfully, “I saw what you did in the interrogation room.” She spoke slowly, scared to anger the other female. “I’ve never seen anyone with a power like mine. I mean I can’t rip a human heart out, but, back when we were fighting them off.” She shrugged looking down and picking at the nail varnish that was on her skin. There was something in the teenager’s voice that caused the stranger to look at her with soft eyes.
“You’re scared of your power?” She asked carefully when she saw the water rising in her dark eyes.
“I’ve hurt people. I’ve lost people.” She confessed closing her eyes, picking harder at the nail varnish.
“We’ve all hurt and lost people. You pick yourself up, dust yourself and learn from it.” Ava told her truthfully. “Whether you want to admit it or not, you’ll use your power again. You either suppress it and deal with the consequences when you do, or you learn to control it so you’re ready.” There was no harshness in her tone like there normally was, just brutal honesty. “When I first discovered my power I locked myself away from everybody. There was this one person who helped me, told me everything I didn’t want to hear but needed to. He was patient and quite frankly stupid to even stand in the same room with me. There was times I nearly killed him whilst I was learning but he never let me give up on myself. Now I know just how far I can and need to go to protect myself.” She admits with a distant look in her eyes as she remembered that hard time of her life.
“But other people they” Wanda started but was instantly cut off.
“Other people will say they trust you, but it’s never fully there. The Captain has his shield to protect him, Falcon has his wings, you have your power. The only difference is yours is stronger than anyone’s. People understand a shield or a pair of wings, they don’t understand power. You have the ability to control the only thing people believe is truly theirs and that will always strike fear in them. With fear there is never full trust from everybody, just certain people.” Ava told her as Wanda nodded looking at the older girl with an understanding.

“Steve he means well.” Wanda finally broke the silence that had fallen over the two girls for a while as Ava typed away on the computer. “He just wants to understand why you are so interested in Bucky. Since he discovered he was still alive, he wants him to be safe. There have been countless times he’s tried to track him down to get him the help. It’s his only connection to the past, the only person who can truly understand what it’s like in this new world.” The young witch bit her lip fearing she may have overstepped a boundary when she saw the grip on the computer mouse tighten.
“And what do you think Wanda?” Ava spoke in a bored tone, not interested in the character reference of the great Captain America.
“I think you feel the same. Your clearly protective of Bucky and although I don’t know why I believe you have your reasons. I believe your reasons are pure and maybe even more stronger than Steve’s. Maybe you both could help each other, you both want the same thing it seems.” Wanda told her uncandidly as Ava held her breath. She opened her mouth to respond, her walls breaking down slightly but instantly snapped her mouth shut when there was a knock at the door. Opening it slowly the Captain in a t-shirt and jeans walked in with a tray of drinks.
“Hey I thought you might want company, didn’t realise you already had some.” He spoke truthfully offering Wanda a questioning glance.
“I thought the same, but, I’m tired from today so I’m going to go to bed. Goodnight Ava. Goodnight Steve.” She smiled standing up and walking out with a final glance at Ava.

“She’s a good kid.” Ava spoke softly staring at the screen, hoping for anything to show.
“Yeah she is. She needs guidance but none of us know how to.” Steve spoke sitting down next Ava and pushing the steaming mug of coffee in her direction. “I’m sorry about before.” He breathed out, his gaze directed too at the screen. Ava automatically thought back to when they both left the room, the Captain disgusted in the brutal act carried out told her exactly what he thought.
“It’s ok. I get it’s hard when you’ve never seen it done before.” She shrugged, trying to let her emotions show.
“How did you learn how to do that?” He asked, desperately wanting to understand her better.
“I was 15 some guy taught me. I’ve never actually killed anyone by doing it. I came close but never did.” She looked over at him surprised she didn’t see shock on his face.
“Can you do it on everyone?” He asked slowly, leaning forward to look at her.
“Some people’s hearts are protected, just takes a little more effort. And no, no one can remove mine. Except me.” She answered his next question. “I can control my heart in a deeper sense than just rate.” She shrugged.
“You ever done it?” He asked curiously getting the better of him.
“Of course. Certain situations call for it.” She told him flatly, which Steve took as a sign not to take this conversation any further.
“I know that street.” Steve spoke after a moment of looking at the map on the screen. “That’s where this happened.” His confused filled voice filled the room as he motioned to his body. “You think that’s where he is? He doesn’t know about that place.” The Captain looked over at her quickly, hoping she would explain.
“He knows it could give him answers. I found his hideout and he had papers on it, the news stories about your transformation. He’s trying to find out who and what he is, he thinks that could help.” Ava started to explain. “The serum used on you was what was used on him, only Erskine picked the best of the best, HYDRA used prisoners of war who fought against it so they had to result into brainwashing. When you rescued him the first time he was losing, when they found him after he fell they knew he’d been reminded that the fight was still alive so that’s when the brainwashing started. That’s why he can’t remember.” She shrugged. “The serum had the majority of the same components, but, they couldn’t perfect it like Erskine did with yours. So there are variations.”
“Like what?” Steve asked.
“I can only make an educated guess without examining your blood. But his strength is higher than yours and healing factor is much stronger and rapid. You take a while to heal from a bullet? He took an hour to heal from a fall from a moving train during which he lost his arm.” She bit her lip.
“Erskine said that it would amplify the personality of the host.” Steve commented. “I refuse to accept this is Bucky’s personality.” He shook his head, there was no way his best friend was this uncaring, cold and emotionless robot.

“As I said, a variation.” She commented, moving closer to the screen. “Got you.” She looked over at the Captain with a smile as the familiar face came into view on the screen.
