The House in the Field

Mr Hot Shot

“Ok swap.” Steve spoke out as he pulled the car over. They were currently travelling to the new location that only Steve knew about when Bucky and Sam kept arguing making the journey less bearable than it already was for the remaining members. They’d been driving for about two hours after they’d gone to Ava’s so she could get some clothes and her essentials. Rolling her eyes Ava got out of the car storming round to the back and swinging the door open as Sam got out. She glared at him before flinging herself into the backseat where she settled down quickly, wrapping her hoodie round her tighter from the chill that came with moving.
“You’re cold?” She heard a soft voice whisper in her ear as she nodded slightly. “You’re tired here.” Bucky whispered again as she felt his heavy jacket cover her instantly causing warmth. “You should sleep. Steve said you haven’t been doing, you’ve been keeping watch on me.” He whispered as she finally looked over at him nodding slowly. “I’m fine come on sleep.” He coaxed as she settled back into her seat, head resting against the window as she brought her knees up to under her chin causing herself to be wrapped in a bubble. With a glance back at the scene unfolding Steve smiled when he noticed a familiar look in his best friends’ eye.

They’d been in the car for just short of three and half hours when Ava felt something cool touch her face gently. She stirred slightly taking a deep breath as she realised she was no longer leaning on the car window but instead something firm but soft at the same time. The scent became instantly recognisable and for a moment she didn’t want to wake up. This is what she had wanted for so long and it was finally happening. Her mind quickly took her back to when things were good, when she was happy. Smiling at the thought she felt the soft touch again as her eyes fluttered underneath her lids causing the touch to disappear. “We’re here Ava.” She heard his voice as she opened her eyes fully with a yawn sitting up from his chest where there was a slight damp patch where she’d dribbled she thought. She rubbed her face and soon realised it wasn’t dribble but tears that had caused the darker grey spot to appear just under his collarbone. She looked up at him with a blush as he smiled slightly at her watching as she handed him his jacket back stretching in the process. She didn’t notice his frown when her v neck rode up and revealed the nasty looking scar just above her hip but she did notice where they were.
“Where are the others?” She asked quickly looking round not seeing anyone else, her face draining of any colour quickly. Bucky misreading this took it as she had become scared that she was alone with him with no one around for her to shout for help. He quickly unclipped his seatbelt and scooted to the furthest end of the car away from her. She frowned slightly from the loss of contact, looking up at him with a confused look.
“They’ve gone checking around the area to make sure it’s safe.” Bucky mumbled looking out of the window. She watched him for a moment before realising why he’d suddenly moved away.

“I know what song you remembered.” She told him carefully, letting out the deep breath she’d held in as his head snapped round to look at her. “You said it was from a film and about a rainbow? Well when I was watching your room at night I did a bit of research. It’s called ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ and it’s from a film called” she was cut off by his quick recital.
“Wizard of Oz.” He whispered as she looked over at him nodding. She could see it in his face that he was reliving the moment, his hands quickly reached up to his head as he willed his memory to go further. He remembered walking out of the cinema with a young girl who he’d been seeing for a while now. She was wearing a red and white polka dot dress that was tight fitting on the top but swayed out on the skirt, he was in his military uniform. It was his last night before he left for war and he’d tried to set Steve up with one of his girls’ friends but Steve had disappeared shortly after Howard Stark’s failed presentation. The friend faked a headache and so it left Bucky with this girl. He knew it would be the last time he’d see for a while, he hoped it would be a while so he wanted to make it special for her. Even though he wouldn’t admit it he’d fallen hard for the girl and he hated that he would be leaving her potentially forever. Ladies’ man Bucky had finally fallen in love and he was scared that he was too late. “I remember it.” He looked over at her with his glassy eyes, hurt and desperation filling them as he stared at her for the longest moment. She let him relive the memory to her, scooting closer to him to show she was there. “I loved her. I was hoping to introduce her properly to Steve at the dance, but, he disappeared before I had chance.” He whispered as she carefully placed her hand on his knee in a soothing way. “I wonder what happened to her.” He whispered after about 5 minutes of silent remembering.
“I’m sure she missed you too James. I bet she was as proud as ever though to know you were doing your bit for your country.” Ava offered him an answer.
“You think?” He asked in a broken tone that broke her heart. She nodded. “Do you think she moved on?” He asked in a soft whisper not sure he wanted to hear the answer. Never before has Ava been so happy for the others coming in to distract them from the answer she would have given, she didn’t want to lie to him, she did know all these answers; but, she knew he had to find them out on his own.

They had all stepped out of the car and was looking up at the small house that was situated in the middle of nowhere. It was about 10 minutes’ walk to the busy suburb. “How do you know this place Cap?” Sam asked looking round at the abandoned house.
“Well actually I followed you here one-night Buck.” The Captain who was supporting a baseball cap told his best friend who looked up at the house with confusion. “You kept sneaking off when you’d stay over at mine after my mom died so I followed you.” Steve confessed as Bucky never took his eyes off the door.
“Bucky are you ok?” Wanda asked as she noticed the glaze in his eyes, all the while Ava had stayed silent looking down at the ground.
“She was here.” He whispered to the left of him where Ava stood. At this moment in time she contemplated using her power to wipe everyone’s memory of this moment, but she couldn’t bring herself to do that to James. He looked over at the girl who had been helping him through this to notice she was silently moving her foot over the dusty road. He could feel his temper rising as he watched her before storming forward and practically kicking the door off its hinges as Steve ran after him.
“Buck what are you doing?” Steve asked grabbing the soldiers shoulder to pull him back and stop him before he went any further. “This is where I used to meet her!” He screamed yanking his metal arm away from Steve and shoving him back as he carried on tearing through the house. Ava noticed Sam stalking forward ready to administer a knockout blow to the former assassin which she held her hand up to stop him, running in herself and standing at the front room door watching has he swung open the cupboard doors and slamming them back closed.
“There you are Hot Shot.” She said in the soft seductive tone she hadn’t used in what felt like eternity. He instantly stopped in his tracks, thinking it was another of his mashed up minds cruel tricks, he spun on his heels to face her as she leaned against the door frame like he remembered. “My Mr Hot Shot.” She whispered over to him as her eyes allowed the tears to drop.
