The House in the Field

September 12, 1939

“Start from the beginning.” Bucky managed to get out through gritted teeth as Ava sat looking round the wooden table that was in the kitchen. They were all sat with silent eyes watching her as she took a deep breath as she was forced to relive the torture from years ago. She looked up into Bucky’s eyes and she saw hatred, anger and fear and she had to close her own to stop her from breaking down instantly. Steve carefully watched the scene unfold in front of him as he sat in the middle of them both, ready to intervene if he needed too. Since meeting Ava many days ago he had always seen her with her strong independent stance that she wore like an armour and not truly caring for anybody else, but, with his best friend that was different. He saw the hope, the fear and the pain in her eyes every time he didn’t remember her, every time he lost it to the Winter Soldier ways, every time she looked at him. He couldn’t believe he didn’t see it until now but it’s the same look he used on Peggy whenever her saw her, it was the look of love. He looked over at her now as tears threatened to spill again, and he’d never seen her look so hurt, so scared, so vulnerable.

“We met at a dance back in ’35, you’d just turned 18 and I wasn’t far behind. We all knew your name you were one of the most handsome guys there and every girl fell at your feet. I sat at the bench not even attempting to make my way through the crowd when I noticed you look over at me, you gave this smirk smile that you did so often after that.” She smiled slightly at the memory. “You asked me to dance, which we did. One song turned into three or four all the while getting to know each other. I knew right then that you’d break my heart.” She bit her lip, not daring to look at the man that she once loved. “You started coming round more and we were in art class together, you asked me to be yours the day before Steve found out his mom had died and we were going to tell him the day he found out.” She paused slowly to look over at the Captain who had his head turn as he too went back to remembering his mother. “You were worried about him and we both knew it wasn’t right to tell him of our happiness when he was suffering. You stayed with him which meant he knew if you went messing. This was my families house and we soon realised that you could sneak here in the middle of the night once Steve was asleep so we could see each other. We’d dance, we’d tell stories, we’d sit in silence but you was always there. Then one night you came and you told me it was time, time to tell Steve about us, you’d arranged for us to go to Stark’s show and told me to bring a friend for Steve.” She looked over at the Captain who remembered that night. “You found out you had been listed to leave in the morning so you wanted our last night to be special. We went to the show and we lost Steve. We went watching Wizard of Oz, your head wasn’t really in it and I could tell that you was thinking of something else. I figured it would be the war but it wasn’t. We walked out of the cinema and you told me you want me to be yours officially, we took one of your bikes and as we were setting off to go to the next village you saw Steve. You went over to tell him that we were planning on getting married and you wanted him to be there, but, he was reenlisting. You went to tell him but he said something and you stopped, you called him a punk instead.” She whispered, the tears flowing freely now. “We got married in secret and I set this place up as our home for when you came back.” She whispered.

“You never came home. I heard you were MIA from a couple of girls in town. I tried to move on with my life, I never looked for anyone else and I didn’t want anyone else. I wanted my Bucky back. I just slipped through life until one day I saw you. You were in a café you hated and you was watching Steve’s old house, before I could run over to you you’d gone and then I heard shots. I started trying to trace you down and I managed to get pretty far. One day I was walking home and I was grabbed from behind, I don’t remember much from that but when I woke up they had injected me with some serum that slowed down my aging process. Years worth of research told me it was the component that made up part of the formula they injected into you both.” She looked over at Steve then at Bucky. “Ever since then I’ve tried to trace you. Every time we met I’d say stuff we used to say to each other to try and trigger your memory but it never worked.” She whispered sadly. She reached into her jacket pocket and pulled out the picture that Steve had seen days ago along with a necklace that on it had his scuffed dog tags and a wedding ring, turning the picture over it read ‘Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes (20) and Ava Alice Scott (19) married September 12, 1939.’ “I managed to hack into SHIELD’s file on you and retrieved your tags and wedding ring, it was the only thing I had left of you.” She whispered as she looked up at him for the first time. All through the memory Bucky remained tense with his fists clenched resting them on the table ready to use them at any moment. The atmosphere was thick with awkwardness and suffering and that put the temperamental solider on edge even more. It wasn’t until he saw the photo of the girl in the dress that he remembered it all. Everything she had said was true. “Can I just” She started to speak but couldn’t get the words out. “I just” another sob escaped. “Five minutes, it’s too much.” And with that she pushed her chair back with a scrape on the floor and running out of the kitchen door.
