Into the Fray

Chapter Two - Unexplored Cookies

Everywhere was busy, she realised. Everywhere in the world, whether it be in this spot right here, or halfway across the world, it was busy. There were people chattering between themselves, loud honks of cars in the busy streets trying to pass pedestrians in a rush. She loved it, if she was honest. Sure, it was very nerve-wrecking and sometimes the massive crowds overwhelmed her; but the feeling of so much life in one place was astonishing to her, it made her feel alive herself. After so many years of living in the shadows, judging the living and deciding on their fate took tolls on people, whether mortal or divine. The Great War had been a gruesome time for everyone, including Valkyire. Accepting the lives of so many innocent young men was heart-breaking. For every battle, there was more loss and more sadness that Valkyrie burdened. She split the men equally, like she always had, and sent half to Odin and half to Freya. Like she always should. Like she had been told. The years 1914 to 1918 were hard on Valkyrie, as much as it was for the men's family back home. Now that the second war had broken out, Valkyrie was on the verge of breaking. She had heard Hitler taking over the Rhineland, and Czechoslovakia, and Switzerland, and Poland, and everything.

She couldn't handle the amount of people lost, not again. The last decade she had been merciful, sparing people of their lives during the times of the great depression to give them a second chance at living and to help broaden the happiness of men. But was it worth it? She wouldn't know. She could do many things, but turning back time was not one of them. Looking back, she wondered if sparing their lives only brought them more pain because of all the suffering they were forced to live through. But there wasn't anything she could do about it. She cannot give or take life without reason.

When the war had officially started, and the slaughtering of men began, Valkyrie could not take any more torture. She refused the gods of these poor young boy's lives and rebelled; leaving her home of shadows, she stepped into the light and joined the land of the living. Before, people could not see her, could not touch her, could not hear her, unless they were on the brink of dying. But now, she was just one person among millions. She was not invisible, but she blended in among the crowd, seeming to be just a regular human being. She slept, and ate, and lived just as the humans do. For once, in her very long lifetime, did she feel alive. But she was still so, so sad. The lives of men were still being taken day by day, and she felt it, every moment of every day. She could feel every soul enter the lifestream. A lifestream, to Valkyrie, was just the whole feeling of the earth, Gaia. The feeling of life and death, the new and old souls that had been lost, the ones that have yet to live. To her it was just the feeling of the circle of like. The birth of a new soul, the death of an old one.

Valkyrie blinked and muttered an apology to the man, stepping to the side as he barges past her way. He is rude, and demanding about her moving, but she sends him a smile and apologises wholeheartedly anyway. She makes her way through the crowd of people and begins to walk up the steps to her apartment. The metal stairs clanged under the pressure of her foot, so she treads lighter on them, hoping she does not disturb any of her neighbours who may be home. She reaches her small, run down apartment, pulling the loose brick out of it's place on the ground, reaching for her key. She unlocks her door quickly, then places the brick back into the wall. When she enters, the door makes a loud creaking sound, making her cringe slightly at it. She closes her door slower than when she opened it, hoping it wouldn't make as much noise as it did before. When she closes her door, it shuts with a small click. She turns to look at her small apartment. She doesn't mind it. It's a little run down, and it gets pretty cold in winter, but she wouldn't have it any other way. Her apartment was small but it was only her, so it wasn't too small. She also didn't own any possessions, other than her clothing, so the apartment was just as bare as when she moved in. Which was only a week ago, so it wasn't as big of a deal as many would think. She would make it more personal when she had the time, she would think to herself. I've only been free a week.

Though for only being human for two weeks, she's done quite a lot with her life. She had gotten a job at a small diner just four blocks down the road, it was small but it was cozy, she loved it. Her apartment was close and was in her budget, so had taken it immediately, knowing that once her paychecks started coming in she would really start to like living here. Her new life was starting to form, and she was excited about it. She dropped her bag next to her small coffee table and took a seat on her small green couch. It groaned in protest when she sat on it, but that was only because the couch was old. She made a mental note to buy a new one soon.

The date was the 15th of September, 1939. Two weeks ago, Hitler had invaded Poland, and England and France had declared war on Germany. Right now, the United States was not yet involved in this, but she knew better. This was how the first Great War had started, this is how the second would as well. She sighed and picked up yesterday's newspaper, deciding to read it over again in case she missed something big. There was a small, timid knock on her door, which made her look up at her door in confusion. She placed down her newspaper, and walked over to her front door quietly. She slowly unlocked it, opening it to see a small lady, blonde hair and blue eyes smiling at her. She was obviously in her mid thirty's, it showed in the crinkles in her smile but the lady was still very beautiful. She smiled back, and opened the door a little wider.

"Hello." The blonde lady had greeted her kindly. "I don't think we've met. My name is Sarah, I live next door to you. You just moved here, correct? I made you some cookies, as well, a house warming gift. A little welcome to the neighbourhood gift, you see."

"Yes." Valkyrie smiled. "Only a week ago. It is very nice to meet you. My name is Valkyrie.Would you like to come in for tea or coffee?" She offered, opening her door wider for the middle aged lady to come in.

"Oh no, no." Sarah declined. "I just wanted to drop these off, I have to make my son and I dinner soon. I just wanted to come say hi, welcome you to the neighbourhood. I'm sorry I haven't come to greet you sooner, I've been a little busy."

"It's fine." Valkyrie laughed, accepting the plate of cookies. "I wouldn't mind if you and your son came over for dinner some day, I'd love to get to know my neighbours better." She admitted a little sheepishly, her cheeks reddened a little. She leaned against her door for support.

"Oh! That would be lovely. I'm sure my son would love to. It seems a little lonely in there, my dear. Do you live alone?" Sarah asked, her head peaking into the apartment curiously.

Valkyrie smiled, almost sadly. "Yes. It's been just me for a while now, ma'am."

"Just Sarah is fine." The lady scolded playfully, sending her a wink. Valkyrie smiled back in response. "Well, we live right next door, it would be wonderful if you came over for dinner tomorrow, you can meet my son! He's a lovely boy. Drop by tomorrow around six. Is that alright, Valkyrie?"

Valkyrie's heart swelled, and she raised herself onto the tip of her toes in excitement. "That sounds perfect, Sarah. I'll see you tomorrow. Thank you for the cookies!"

"You're welcome, dear." Sarah smiled. "I'll see you tomorrow." She clapped her hands suddenly, and stepped away from Valkyrie's doorway. "Six o'clock!" She reminded, yelling behind her before she had opened and walked into her own apartment. Valkyrie chuckled and closed her door, looking down at the plate of cookies before her. She'd never tried them before, so today was exciting. She sat down at her couch once again and placed the plate on her coffee table, picking one up and taking a big bite. The cookie was still warm, and the small chocolate bits melted in her mouth. She moaned in delight as the taste danced on her taste buds. They were delicious.

Suddenly, Valkyrie was very excited for tomorrow evening
