The D in Apartment 23

Let's Get You Inside and Warm

Harry approached the guy who had just ruined her date night with her own free hand raised, she wasn't sure whether to smack him or hug him. "My name is Bucky Barnes, I used to be your neighbour." Bucky started as she glared at him.
"I know who you are jackass." She spat out ready to hit him stopping when she saw movement from under his jacket where his hand were. "What's in there?" She eyed him and the jacket quickly, she wasn't sure if he was Bucky or the Winter Soldier.
"The reason I need your help. Promise not to freak out." He pleaded with her as she just stared back.
"I promise." She breathed out as his metal hand came down and moved the front half of his jacket slightly, just enough for her to step back with a gasp when she saw it. He looked up at her as she stared wide eyed at him speechless. "You have a baby!" She shouted out staring at him as he looked round to make sure no one was close enough to hear.
"I will explain everything in a minute but for now I need to get you both somewhere safe. Do you know anywhere?" He asked her as she frowned.
"Yeah there's this house where superheros live, seems pretty secure." She held her hands up as though it was the most obvious answer.
"I can't." He mumbled out.
"I know somewhere." She moved closer to him reaching around and grabbing his knife from his waistband.
"What are you doing?" He stared at her, worried she'd flipped.
"The baby is cold." She mumbled out cutting at her skirt to make it a mini flipping the knife back and putting it in her coat pocket. "Give me the baby." She held her hands out which he reluctantly filled with the tiny human being. Harry quickly wrapped the baby up in the makeshift blanket and held her close so she could feel the warmth of her skin through the soft silk shirt, something that the baby seemed happy with as Harry felt the tiny hands pull her closer. "Come on follow me." She told Bucky once she tore her attention away from the baby. They started walking down the street when Bucky wrapped his arm around Harry, his hand sitting snuggly on her hip as she looked up at him.
"So I can protect you both." He whispered as she just gave him a whatever look. She was still so angry at him but she couldn't deny that all her feelings had came rushing back and with his arm around her she felt so safe and secure and happy.

The finally reached where she had lead them as the bright lights filled the dark. "I meant somewhere where nobody would be." He told her stopping walking causing her to stop.
"Trust me." She whispered walking the opposite way from the entrance. "There is a an abandoned corridor that my friend and I discovered, only Claire, me and Peter know about it." She tried to reassure him as she opened the old metal security door with ease.
"Who is Claire?" He followed her in, walking into one of the rooms where she placed the little sleeping baby in a cot ready to examine her.
"She's trustworthy." She looked at him, he knew she was keeping something from him but he were in no position to pry. Harry carried out her examination of the baby which took her no longer than fifteen minutes. "Well this little one is female, I'd say she's around 6 month old, she's lacking in nourishment. She's responsive to voices which is good, but, not necessarily wary of strangers which is pretty weird, she's not even second glanced me." She told him truthfully. "She needs an IV drip, food, TLC and a name." She looked up at him to see him looking down at the baby. "I need an explanation, answers and a big fat apology." She shrugged going over to the cabinet to grab what she needed. She always kept down here stocked with fresh supplies, just in case she ever needed to look after Peter, or, an Avenger. She quickly got to work on the little baby, something she rarely does, allowing the little girl to grab her finger for comfort when she injected her to add the IV. She gently picked the little baby up rocking her gently to get her to settle down enough to sleep, which she did after about 15 minutes. All the time Bucky stood watching her as she walked backwards and forwards to the window talking to the little girl in a soft nurturing voice that seemed to soothe the baby even more. Harry gently placed her down in the cot once she was sure the little girl wouldn't wake up.

She turned to look at Bucky after discarding her gloves to see him wincing in pain. "Your hurt?" She asked concern flooding her voice and face as he shook his head.
"It's nothing." He tried his best to smile, but, she wasn't buying it.
"Get your ass on the bed." She demanded and he knew not to defy her, gently getting himself on the bed careful not to turn in a way his body didn't like. She quickly undressed him of his bodysuit and shirt noticing the wound on his side, she tried not to look upset about it but she obviously didn't do a good enough job because Bucky placed his hand on her arm to grab her attention.
"I'm okay. It's okay. It'll heal soon." He told her truthfully as she looked at him.
"Let me stitch it, it'll help to heal you quicker." She whispered as he nodded, she quickly grabbed what she needed for him and stitched him up gently stroking his abs soothingly. "What happened Bucky?"
"A knife." He laughed groaning at the pain. She smiled along but he knew what she was talking about. "I had to protect you. I've not just left you alone, I checked on you everyday, made sure you was okay; even kept them from coming back." He told her truthfully. He recalled the night he was keeping watch on her apartment and noticed two guys let themselves in, they knew exactly where to go and he knew exactly what they were planning. He took them out on the second floor stairwell with minimum effort, and even little noise.
"But you had my memories wiped. You was in my head." She whispered and he had to look away so he didn't see the heartbreak on her face.
"I had to protect you." He whispered as she sat on the edge of the bed. "How do you remember me?" He frowned slightly and it was her turn to look nervous.
"I have this thing" she started unsure how to word it, "I can feel other people's emotions. When you told me you'd train me I knew you was lying I could feel it, so I wrote everything down so I would remember when I got home." She whispered truthfully to him shrugging slightly.
"You have powers?" He asked shocked at how smart that was of her.
"It's more an ability." She clarified quickly. "Anyway, can I ask about the baby? Legally I have 24 hours to notify the police of an abandoned child. Unless she hasn't?" She asked holding her breath quickly.
"She's not mine." He finally clicked at what she meant and she let out a deep sigh of relief. "We were on a mission and I found her there, in a warehouse on a cold floor. I couldn't leave her there Harry. I didn't tell the others because they'd have called it in and SHIELD or whatever they are now, is still compromised. I think she has powers." He whispered. "I came to you because I know I can trust you and you could help." He told her truthfully.
"I could lose my job Bucky." She whispered looking at him with worry.
"That won't happen I promise." He told her, wanting nothing more than to stroke her cheek but knowing he couldn't. "We just need a plan." He told her as she bit her lip.
"I think I have one."

She couldn't believe she was doing this or that it was her idea. She'd stabilised Amelia as her and Bucky had decided to call the little girl and was walking up the road towards the gate. "Sorry to interrupt, but, there is a civilian with a child walking up the road she seems to be heading straight here." One of the new guys came and told the group who were sat around on one of their days off watching television. Bucky looked at Steve quickly, who in turn looked at Tony.
"What did you do?" He quickly shot the question to the guy who was definitely ladies man.
"Nothing!" Tony protested holding his hands up. "Rodgers, Wanda you take this one. Get in her head see what's going on. Rodgers just be Rodgers." He told them as they nodded, grabbing his hoodie and throwing it on. They quickly made their way down the road as they approached the small figure with a bright white blanket.
"It's Harry." Wanda practically shouted as she ran over to a girl she once classed as a friend, Steve quickly close behind.
"Surprise." Harry smiled nervously. "I can explain everything I promise." She used the line Bucky used on her.
"The baby, is Bucky the dad?" Steve asked quickly as Harry laughed shaking her head.
"I found her. I've called her Amelia because she needed a name. I think she has powers, I didn't want to tell the police because I don't know what they'd do to her. Please help, I didn't know where else to turn." She told them quickly trying not to cry.
"Come on let's get you inside and warm." Wanda told her taking her in her arm walking her towards the Avengers HQ building.
