The D in Apartment 23

Be Sure They're On Your Side

"So you can remember everyone?" Wanda asked frowning slightly that her powers hadn't worked, she were scared of Bucky's reaction. Harry had filled them in on how she remembered them and how she found the baby abandoned on her way home from her date.
"Let me just go give Bucky the heads up?" Steve asked her politely as she nodded slowly watching him disappear through the door.
"How has he been?" Harry asked looking over at Wanda with genuine concern.
"He's been okay." Wanda tried her best to offer a reassuring smile. "What am I saying? He's missed you like mad Harry, he's been keeping checks on you when we've not been on missions and he's sent someone to watch you when we have. He's trying to find the guys who came into your apartment that night, I dread to think what he has planned when he finds them." She broke almost instantly spilling out all of Bucky's secrets. The door opened slowly revealing Steve who continued to hold the door open for the females to enter which they did, Harry biting her lip hard as she walked to their downtime space looking down at the baby.
"Harry." Clint smiled over at her as her eyes met all of theirs one by one until she got to Bucky. "How have you been?" He asked distracting her enough not to notice Bucky nod to Steve asking if he was okay from behind her.
"Yeah. I've been okay I guess. How are you guys? None of you hurt I hope?" She smiled as he laughed. After a brief catch up in which Bucky remained silent, the elephant in the room couldn't be ignored any longer.
"So you found the baby?" Tony asked eyeing her suspiciously.
"Yes Tony. She definitely isn't mine." She looked up at him as he nodded deciding she was telling the truth. "I think she has powers of sorts." She bit her lip.
"What kind of powers?" Tony asked before anybody else had the chance.
"Well she doesn't respond to strangers and her pupils don't work like ours, so I assume she can see things that you and I cannot see." Harry explained her theory, she came to the conclusion when the little girl was in the hospital, but, it wasn't until they were walking up the road that she realised she was right. Amelia had been focused on something above Harry's shoulder, there was nothing there for about five minutes until a car came speeding down the road making Harry jump out of the way quickly.
"You're talking about ghosts?" The no nonsense tone of Clint asked.
"I'm talking future." She corrected him, "I can tell for sure from a brain scan, if you'd be so kind as to allow me to use your facilities." Harry continued glancing over at Bruce who just nodded.
"We need to call this in" Steve started, quickly stopping when Harry's glance shot his way.
"Please don't. Look let me confirm my thoughts and then at least we know what we are dealing with?" She pleaded with him, her eyes practically begging him.
"Fine." He nodded.
"Thank you." She smiled at him as he just nodded back.

Harry had been given full unrestricted access to the lab and all it's equipment she'd scanned the little baby and was analysing the picture. She was just finishing off the last of her cold coffee, her glance going over to Amelia in her make shift cot every few minutes, when the door opened. "Hey I thought you might like a bit of company. I brought you coffee 4 sugars." He smiled placing the mug down in front of her as she smiled up at him.
"Thank you, you don't have too stay with here it could take me a while." She told him flicking back to the screen before scribbling down something on the notepad next to the keyboard.
"Well I thought we could catch up and I'm not a big sleeper so." He shrugged as she laughed softly, biting his lip as he fought with himself to ask her the question he was dying to know the answer too.
"Your nervous, you want to ask me a personal question. No he's not my boyfriend; my best friend set me up on a date to move on. She thinks from Kit, but, we both know it's you." She answered without him even asking.
"How did you know?" He looked at her, the shock in his voice causing her to smirk slightly.
"A personal question making you nervous. I was on a date when you interrupted me." She shrugged looking at him laughing.
"I'm sorry. Are you going to see him again?" He asked as she just stared at him.
"You don't have to ask awkward questions. Probably not." She smiled slightly, her eyes flicking over to Amelia when she moved.
"Why not? Did her do something to you?" Bucky asked quickly his fist clenching.
"Easy Sergeant. No I ran out on the date." She bit her lip before adding, "and he's not you." The blush crept on to her cheeks and Bucky couldn't help but smile.
"I am sorry you know." He whispered. "It's crazy because I hadn't known you long but," he paused taking a deep breath before finishing his sentence, "I loved you too much for you to get hurt because of me." He whispered as her jaw fell. "I know it's really soon, and messed up. I'm not asking you to forgive me or for anything to happen; it's just I missed you so much and I know I should have never gone into your head." He tried to justify himself, quickly stopping when her lips crashed into his.
"I love you too." She whispered when she pulled away. "I'm stronger than you think, a couple of broken bones and ugly bruises aren't going to knock me back. Please just promise me you'll never go into my head again." She whispered as he nodded quickly. They spent the rest of their time down in the lab talking about Bucky's missions and Harry's life whilst she finished up her findings.

Harry jumped up from the uncomfortable position she'd fallen asleep in, momentarily lost until she saw the fancy computer in front of her. Looking round she saw Bucky slumped over in the desk chair with his head on the cold desk top, she flicked her gaze over to Amelia's cot to find she weren't there, her eyes widening as she rushed over to the door, noticing Clint walking down with the little bundle huddled safely in his arms. "Morning. She was hungry so we went for a walk to the kitchen to get some food didn't we?" He asked the rhetorical question to the infant who was greedily drinking her milk as Clint smiled down. "Did you find what you was looking for?" He asked looking up at her as she smoothed down her hair.
"Yeah. Is everyone awake?" She asked as he nodded. "I'll wake Bucky up and come tell you all together?" She suggested as Clint smiled a knowing smirk.
"Sure, I'll meet you up there." He winked before exiting the lab with the little baby.
"Bucky, you need to wake up everyone's upstairs waiting to find out about the findings." She whispered stroking the hair from his face gently running her finger over his cheek, causing him to smile before opening his eyes.
"Morning doll." His rough morning voice filled the silence of the room.
"Morning." She smiled with a blush turning away intent on grabbing her papers to hide her redness. "That was the best nights sleep I've had in ages." He laughed getting up from the chair stretching out his cramped muscles as she shot him a look.
"I'll get you a prescription for sleeping tablets before I leave." She laughed swinging the door open and missing Bucky's wide eyed sad look when the word leave was mentioned.

"Morning." Harry greeted them all as they all responded in a mixture of mornings and hums as Bucky pulled a chair out for her, deciding to stand so she could have the last seat; smiling up at him she carefully sat down biting her lip.
"So Clint said you have found something?" Steve started anxious that they hadn't called the news of the baby in.
"Yeah I have. It's pretty interesting really." She started spreading out the circled brain scan and diagrams that had been annotated to help everyone understand. "Every none enhanced human has parts of the brain that have certain purposes, I was looking to see if Amelia had any abnormalities in hers and she has. The Hippocampus which is responsible for short term to long term memory is considerably larger. If I show you this one compared to a scan of mine you can see the difference and I'm an adult." Harry pointed out the same coloured parts on each picture. "Not only that the Amygdala is working overtime. It's responsible for fear, memory and for fight or flight response; Amelia's seems to be working faster than the world around her. She sees potential threats before they even happen, this triggers her fight or flight and becomes a long term memory. She's living out the threat before it's happened and she remembers." She looked round the room to make sure they were all taking it in, she'd tried to keep it at a minimum of technicality.
"That's why she isn't scared of any of us. She's seen her meeting with us all and knows we wont hurt her, she knows we're not a threat." Tony was the first to understand and process it all.
"Basically yes. She also seems to come across as highly intelligent. It appears that Amelia understands the adult world around her and responds to certain things that a baby of her age shouldn't, the issue is she can't communicate that because certain parts of her brain aren't at that speed yet, neither is her body. She has unique brain waves that are truly off the scale and team that with her DNA which we still know nothing about and any powers that may grow along with her I think she's at risk." Harry bit her lip.
"What do you mean at risk?" Clint asked quickly, subconsciously holding the little lady tighter.
"If the wrong people find out about her and her skills she's potentially the strongest weapon they could use." Harry bit her lip harder at the thought that anyone could hurt the innocent baby she'd grown attached too. "Whatever the next move is, whoever you tell; you need to be sure they're on your side." She warned as everyone looked round at each other unsure of the next move.
