The D in Apartment 23

Watch Her

Bucky wasn’t sure if this was his imagination but here she was her blue eyes watering, pleading with him. He took a timid step closer and realised that this was real, he walked over to her bed slowly and noticed her scoot up enough for him to fit in. As soon as he got in she wrapped her arms around his waist so tight she knocked the wind out of him. She sobbed into his chest and for a moment he was paralysed with fear not knowing what to do, slowly bringing his arms around her to hold her tightly to him leaving her to get her emotions out. He made no move to make himself comfortable or talk, he knew she needed the silence for a moment. “I need you to explain” she whispered looking up at him with eyes that broke his heart. “I need you to tell me what you remember.” She requested again as Bucky closed his eyes, the thoughts of reliving this moment with her terrifying.
“You sure that’s what you want?” He asked her biting his lip as she nodded. “I’d been given the mission in the morning before; I’d set up a phone tap and bugged the house. I heard you tell them both that you were going out that night to celebrate an occasion and your mum had said that she was going for cocktails with a friend. Your dad had rung in work sick so I figured that night would have been the best time; minimum victims. I got in easily enough and they were both on the sofa watching television. Your dad instantly recognised me from his research into HYDRA for the project. He stood up putting a wall between me and your mom to protect her. He asked for me not to hurt her, but, I took the shot anyway. Your mom mentioned the tracking system that she would tell me everything and that’s when I realised it was her who had worked it out.” He bit his lip hard as he let the information sink in. “I never found the plans I did try.” He looked down to see her frowning, she was still lay on his chest and for that he was thankful. She heard his heart banging a mile a minute from the nerves.

“My mum what was she wearing?” She asked the peculiar question. Bucky frowning as he thought back to her lifeless body on the sofa.
“A pink blouse with a pair of black suit pants.” He told her truthfully as she sat up staring at him.
“That’s not what she was wearing. She was in a purple onesie. The one she wore to lounge about the house in.” She frowned in confusion. “My dad what wrist was his watch on?”
“Left.” Bucky answered instantly, his face to contorting into confusion.
“He never wore it on his left. He was left handed so when he wrote it was in the way.” She told him. “You didn’t kill my parents.” She shook her head.
“Harry please, your refusing to accept this but it’s true.” Bucky tried knowing the more she denied it the harder it was going to be for her when she finally did accept it.
“No. You described to me in great detail what I was wearing and what I was doing, but, the people you killed you can’t remember simple information? Bucky, you didn’t kill my parents.” She looked up at him, and he could have sworn he saw relief in her eyes.
“Look you’ve had a long day you should sleep; you’ve got rehabilitation tomorrow.” He told her realising that trying to convince her wasn’t going to work. She looked up at him with a nod before settling back down slowly. “I’ll be outside if you need anything.” He whispered making his move to get up off the bed.
“Stay.” The simple word came out as she grabbed his arm. “I mean stay please? Tony said you haven’t been sleeping because of nightmares and I don’t want to be alone.” She whispered as he looked unsure, nodding slowly and settling back down. She instantly nestled under his arm, hers over his waist. “I’m sorry Bucky.” She whispered once they’d gotten comfortable. “I said I’d always stand by you and for that moment I didn’t.” She carried on as he laughed.
“Doll, you’ve lasted longer than most.” He whispered with a soft smile as she kissed his chest. “I’m sorry for putting you through that. Nothing is going to hurt you like that again.” He promised her as her grip on his shirt got tighter. “I love you.” He whispered.
“I love you too.” She whispered back before letting sleep overcome her.

“Okay I guess you know how these work.” Bruce spoke to Harry as Bucky pushed her over to the two adjacent support bars. She nodded slowly gripping the side of the wheelchair pushing down and standing up slowly, she looked over her shoulder at Bucky with a small smile as he pulled the chair away her grip instantly going to the bars. “Take your time.” Bruce offered.
“I can do this. I got this.” She whispered more to herself than the others. She looked down at her legs knowing the movement she wanted to be doing but for some reason they weren’t doing. “Come on guys work with me here.” She mumbled gripping the bars tighter. Bruce and Bucky watching and hoping for progress knowing that she couldn’t work until she could walk. She was stood at the bars for a good ten minutes with no movement and Bruce could see the pain on her face. Harry noticed him look at his watch and realised he was about to call time. “Can you guys leave?” She asked slowly. “I don’t want to sound ungrateful for your time, it’s just” she paused biting her lip “embarrassing.” She whispered.
“Doll what if you fall?” Bucky asked, not prepared to let her face this alone.
“Then I’ll get back up. You can’t be around me all the time; falls are going to happen.” She shrugged as Bucky looked over to Bruce.
“If you fall ask Tuesday to get one of us okay?” Bruce looked at her. “I’m going to put a monitor on you to measure your heart, if I think you’re getting to stressed I’m coming in here and carrying you back to bed understood?” He spoke to her like he was her dad laying down the law to his teenage daughter who he was leaving on her own for the first time.
“Yes, doctor.” She smiled at him as he nodded walking to the door making sure Bucky followed. “Thank you.” She gave them once last smile before the door closed and she was left on her own with the therapy bars.

Bucky watched her from the security room for four hours. She had managed to walk several steps before having to stop for a few minutes before carrying on. He heard her shout at herself a few times and telling herself to get on with it but she just couldn’t get all the way across, each time she got just short of half way then had to go back to sit down. He knew she wouldn’t be leaving that room until she got all the way across, decided he needed to give her a little help in hand. He was about to walk to her room but Steve and Natasha entering the security room stopped him.
“Hey buddy.” Steve smiled over at Bucky who offered him a nod back.
“We saw you both cuddled up this morning?” Natasha came straight out with it. “Are you both back on?” She asked, hope in her eyes.
“I don’t know, we’ve spoken about that night.” He whispered and Steve noticed there was something wrong.
“What is it Buck?” He asked causing Bucky to look up at him guiltily.
“She doesn’t believe I killed them because I couldn’t tell her what her mom was wearing or what side her dads watch was on.” He whispered as Steve frowned, Natasha looking over at them both her face contorted in confusion.
“She has a point. I remember the stupidest details from the lives I took.” Natasha told them both.
“Your brain hadn’t been wiped countless times.” Steve looked over at her quickly.
“When they used to do that, was it silent?” Natasha ignored Steve as Bucky frowned wondering where she was going with this.
“There was idle chatter, but, not directed toward me.” He answered hoping she would tell him what she was thinking.
“What if they didn’t just wipe your memories?” Natasha asked biting her lip. “What if they used the power of suggestion, like what Wanda does? What if that ‘idle chatter’ was a way to give you a memory?” She looked at both soldiers who gave her a clueless stare. “Think about it, you’re the fall guy; every security council in the world knows who you are; countless kills so what would two more do to the total? If you were captured, you would admit it was you because that’s what you think.” She frowned.
“Natasha I remember taking the shot.” He spat out to her, not believing she was going along with this nonsense.
“You remember taking a shot. World’s best assassin why would it take you three attempts to kill her dad?” She asked, Steve too frowning at this thought. “You were practically point blank range, it wouldn’t. You could kill my guy from up a mountain.” She told him matter of factly. “You need to think right back and try to get to the true memory.” Natasha told him truthfully as Bucky looked up at Steve for help.
“I think she’s right.” Steve told his best friend truthfully, biting his lip.
“I need to speak to Wanda.” Bucky spoke out, “Watch her.” He motioned to the screen before leaving the security room quickly in search of the teenager.
