The D in Apartment 23

My Turn to Owe You One

Harry was surprised she had everything that Bucky had said she needed to fix the loose connection in his arm that had caused it to malfunction. It was lucky that she wore glasses so she had the small intricate screwdrivers that most don't have. Her hands were naturally steady from her work as a surgery doctor, but, even she was feeling a sense of pressure as she focused intently on the fiddly wires that had a purpose. When she operated the patient was normally out cold so their emotions never physically effected her, Bucky was awake; watching and feeling everything. "You're nervous." He commented as she paused to look up at him, her cheeks hinting at her flustered state.
"I can't say I've ever done this." She smiled at him before returning her attention back to his forearm, his hand covering hers.
"Someones here." He whispered, "Are you expecting anyone? I know I'm not." She shook her head placing her hand on his right shoulder.
"You can't move we'll lose the positioning. I'll go." She whispered, he looked unsure attempting to stand but she pushed him down harder and walked off towards the door, stopping at the unit at the side of it to grab the baseball bat resting on it. She paused holding the door handle as she tried to feel the intruders emotions which was panic and worry. Twisting the metal handle sharply the click of the lock sounded and she was out in a flash, making her way into the flat opposite hers with the bat raised high.
"Buck you in here? You're door was open." She heard another male's voice as she entered to see him walking out of the bedroom area. Swinging the bat at the intruder she was amazed when he caught it.
"Who are you?" He asked holding the bat tightly to make sure she didn't attempt to swing it again. It was then when Harry caught a proper look at the intruder to see none other than Captain America stood staring at her expectantly.
"Shit sorry, he said he wasn't expecting anybody." She breathed out, releasing the tension of her arm to show him it was safe to let go of the bat.
"He? The guy who lives here?" The blonde male questioned, surprise clear in his tone.
"Bucky, yeah." She smiled politely, "He had an incident so he's over at my apartment whilst I fix it up for him." She motioned to the door before walking out, the Captain quickly close behind her.
Steve wasn't prepared for the sight he saw when he followed this stranger into her apartment. Being taller than her he could see over her head that his best friend was sat on a tall stool at a breakfast bar, his metal arm resting on the work surface and an array of tools scattered around him. "Steve." Bucky spoke out sounding just as surprised as his best friend did before. "I thought you was away?" He asked quietly as Harry made her way back over to the neighbour and carried on connecting the loose wires.
"Yeah we completed it quicker than we thought." Steve spoke quietly watching the scene in front of him. He'd never seen his best friend this comfortable around a stranger before, even when Steve introduced him to the others Bucky still was unsure of his new friends. "What happened?" He asked nodding towards his arm whilst walking further into the unfamiliar apartment, his guard slipping slightly.
"I felt a shock in it so I swung my arm and got it stuck in the wall. I think a wire had come loose." Bucky looked up at his best friend.
"Well there's definitely a wire loose now." Harry chipped in with a smile. "There's coffee in the pot if you'd like some." She turned to the man who was standing awkwardly in the middle of her front room. He'd just poured himself a mug when the brown haired girl let out an 'aha' surprising the guys. "All connected from what I can tell. I think you might have some frayed wires touching the side causing your shocks, whoever normally does this you might want to get them to look at them." She told the super soldier sliding further back on her chair away from him and gathering the tools that she had used.
"Thank you again." He nodded sliding his hoodie back over him and zipping it up to hide his naked chest.
"Once again, you're welcome. Here's some wipes for the cut on your head, keep cleaning it with them it should heal - oh never mind." She spoke as she'd gone round the back of him to check on it to notice it was practically healed. "Wish everyone could do that." She laughed quietly before heading off towards her bathroom to wash her hands and discard of everything she didn't need. Steve shot a questioning glance his best friends way who just shook his head with a shrug, moving his arm to make sure everything worked fine.
"We should get you back to Stark or Banner so they can give it a proper look at." Steve told him lowly as Harry entered the room again, this time in her scrubs, tying her hair up tightly. "Your a nurse?" He asked her noticing the uniform.
"Close I'm a surgery doctor." She smiled connecting her pager to the inside of her left pocket, her phone being slipped into the same pocket.
"At central?" He asked again.
"Yep." She smiled as Steve nodded. "Ok so sorry to kick you both out, but, you've already interrupted my breakfast but making me late for work as well would be unforgivable." She laughed a little grabbing her own hoodie. "If you need me again just knock or shout." She looked over at her neighbour who had stood up and along with his best friend had headed to the door, followed shortly by her.
"Seems like it's my turn to owe you one." Bucky told her softly, watching her lock her door.
"You can get me coffee sometime, milk and four sugars." She smiled before heading off down the corridor.
"So she seems nice." Steve started off as he and Bucky walked towards the parking lot to get in the Beetle that he had chosen as his car.
"She does?" Bucky looked over at the other soldier, who gave him a 'seriously' kind of look. Steve was no expert when it came to love, he was on ice for 60 odd years, but, even he couldn't believe how blind the once Mr Charming was.
"Yeah, she's pretty too." Steve added before slipping into the car not catching Bucky's response. "I thought you was keeping away from people anyway so how did she come to know you?" Steve asked as they set off for the short drive to the ex SHIELD base, to get his arm checked.
"I heard shouting and her ex boyfriend had raised his fist, I stopped him." He shrugged nonchalantly. "Not in that sense. I just grabbed his arm and twisted it will be fine a few hours later." He looked over at Steve's concerned face. The rest of the drive was spent talking about the mission Steve had just returned from, it was a simple obtain a nuclear weapon from a group of hostiles. Bucky made himself comfortable in the chair he'd been in so many times when he reached the lab.
"So what happened?" Bruce asked scooting closer to the assassin on the office chair as he examined the arm exterior, before digging in to the interior. Bucky told him exactly what happened and that he had someone reattach the wires until he could get here.
"Well I'd keep whoever did this close. If you're not going to live here then if it ever malfunctions again they'd be good to have around, they've done a pretty good job." Bruce informed the two soldier as he replaced the small worn parts.
