The D in Apartment 23

Wrapped Up Like a Burrito with his Teddy

"Favourite colour?" Bucky asked once she'd sat down on the floor next to him, back resting against the sofa her head falling back on to the cushion. She let out a hum whilst she was thinking, Bucky turning on his side leaning his head on his metal hand looking over at her with a smile.
"Navy and Grey." She responded opening her eyes and to look up at him. "What about you?" She asked smiling.
"I'd say Navy. My coat in the Howling Commados was Navy." He smiled as she blushed. "Why does that make you blush?" He questioned frowning a little.
"Because the pictures I've seen of you in that coat suggests it is very your colour." She raised her eyebrows at him hoping he'd get what she was saying. It took him a few seconds but he did, throwing his head back to laugh.
"Going to ask can I have that coat back then." He winked at her as her cheeks got even redder.
"What's your favourite food?" She asked him, smiling as it was his turn to think hard.
"Ok so back in the war they had this cake called Chiffon Cake. It's just cake, but, with rationing and war it was the best damn thing you would ever taste. One of my buddies was married and his wife would send him some every so often when she saved up enough of her rations. She'd make enough so that we could all have a piece." He relayed the memory to her with a fond smile. He could still taste the sweetness now and how every guy in his unit sighed with content when the cake touched their lips. "It tasted like home you know?" He asked looking over at her and she nodded her eyes twinkling just slightly. "Do you have a food that reminds you of England?" He asked.
"Not really. My I was so close to my grandma so she taught me how to bake and stuff. She used to have all the family round on a Sunday, there was that many of us we had to sit on the floor, in different rooms, one time we even had to sit on the bed." She laughed shaking her head at how ridiculous that day was. "Anyway, she'd always cook everything. She used to make a meat pie and apple pie for dessert. It was every bit perfect. Everyone could be arguing or not speaking, but, once those pies were made we were a family again." She smiled, the nostalgia hitting her at once that she hadn't noticed the tear spill over until Bucky gently caught it with his thumb.
"She sounded amazing." He whispered, stroking her cheek softly.
"She were." She whispered back, looking at him biting her lip. She leaned forward slightly, taking a deep breath before closing the gap between them both and allowing her smooth coated lips land on his chapped ones. Harry was terrified that he was going to pull away and leave, scared she was moving to fast for him, but, she had to at least try. Her brain almost didn't register when he responded by kissing her back, his hand tangling in her hair.

There was a soft knock at the door the next morning. Harry instantly glaring at the door as she rushed out of the kitchen to answer it. After they kissed last night Bucky and Harry's night consisted of more stories and more kissing. He'd told her how he woke up practically every night from a nightmare, how each time it were a different victim of his that haunted his sleeping moments. Harry told him how she found her parents mutilated bodies in their front room and how she were on tablets to help her cope with the mental wounds that that brought. Swinging the door open to stop whoever it was from knocking again so that they didn't wake up the sleeping assassin, she noticed a now familiar face. "Steve hey." She kept her voice low hoping he would do the same.
"Hey Harry. I'm looking for Bucky?" He asked, thankfully keeping his smooth voice to a minimum. She stepped to the side so that he could see his sleeping best friend, on the floor with a blanket over him.
"We stayed up most of the night talking and we just fell asleep here." She whispered looking over at Steve. He could see the care that Harry had for his best friend covering her face. "Is it for a mission? Do you want to go wake him up?" She asked biting her lip, hoping it wasn't for a mission.
"No no, I was coming to see how his date went." He laughed a little causing Harry to blush.
"Well you can come in for coffee if you want see if we can get you them answers?" She laughed as he nodded following her into the apartment and straight through to the kitchen.

"So he stayed over huh?" Steve asked glancing over at his best friend then turning his attention over to Harry who was making coffee for them both.
"I guess he did." She laughed a little, "Is that surprising?" She asked softly placing the steaming mug in front of the great Captain America.
"A little. He doesn't stay over anywhere. When we are on missions he sleeps in like a containment chamber in case he flips into Winter Soldier mode. The chamber takes time for him to break out and we are alerted so we can all become ready." Steve told her truthfully, her horrified look didn't go unnoticed.
"He prefers it like that. He doesn't trust himself. It's either this way, or, he doesn't sleep. He wakes up about three of four times a night with a nightmare; sometimes he can go back to sleep but normally he can't." Steve reassured her. "He seems content here though." He whispered looking over at him.
"Maybe this is his safe place." She whispered catching Steve's attention. "You know when you were a kid and something terrible happened to you. Like you got bullied at school or your pet died or something, you'd always go to the place that made you feel safe didn't you? Mine was always my bed. I used to roll myself up in the quilt with my Winnie-the-Pooh teddy and I was in my safe place." She tried her best to explain to him. "Maybe because no one knows about me, or this place, he thinks of this as his safe place." She whispered. "Maybe he's wrapped up like burrito with his teddy." She smiled as Steve let out a chuckle as he looked over at his strong best friend with that image.
