Dark Heart

Chapter 3

Chapter 3

Her throat and chest burn as she coughs, sitting up. The harsh lights glare brightly at her as her dry eyes gaze around. Loki sits against the wall on the opposite side of the room, knees pulled up with his elbows resting on them, head tilted down. He is no longer chained, but he appears to be asleep. Jess shifts quietly on the soft bed but something tangles around her feet as she moves. Glancing down, she slides her fingers across the silk, emerald green robe that rest over her lap. Her eyes travel back to Loki, watching him curiously. He obviously had been the one that saved her…but why?

A quiet beeping sounds around the room. Slowly Loki’s head lifts up, cold eyes meeting hers. Standing, he pushes away from the wall and walks towards her….his eyes never breaking contact with hers. She is almost sure he can hear how fast her heart is beating as he ever so slowly leans down, placing a hand on each side of her, his lips just mere inches away. His right hand continues to slide past her, barely grazing her thigh as the beeping noise ceases. Abruptly turning away from her, he fiddles with a small, round, metal device, it must have been the source of the sound.

Turning back towards her, he presses his finger to his lips gesturing for her to stay quiet as he aims the device at the glass door, and it melts away, smoke billowing into the cell. Suddenly he grabs her hand, jerking Jess almost painfully to her feet, and strides out of the holding cell. Loki drags the weak girl behind him as he makes his way through the smoke to the door. Using the device once more, he points it as the steel frame as she watches in amazement, the door melting down, and pooling across the floor.

He jerks her once more through door way, this time pulling her close as flames reach out for them. Wrapping an arm around her waist, he guides them through the flames. When they reach the end of the hallway, he swears, the raging fire blocking their way out. Turning, he wraps his arms around her tightly and pushes her into a corner, pressing his body tightly against her to shield her from the flames and begins muttering in a strange language, and suddenly there are no more flames, no more holding cells, not even a hint of smoke on their clothing.

His sudden release causes her to stumble a bit as she gazes around in awe. They are now in a large room, the walls a gleaming gold, filled from floor to ceiling with bookshelves, over flowing with leather bound novels and reading material. Without a word, he turns and heads through a set of doors, closing them behind him with a loud bang, leaving Jess to her own thoughts. Her eyes scan the room, letting its beauty sink in. In the corner is a side table, a single withered rose on the top. Just to her left is a large chase, a soft cream color with a dark green throw tossed over its side. Behind her sits a king sized bed, coved with a deep green comforter, accented with gold.“He must really like those colors.” Jess mumbles to herself.

She approaches one of the many shelves and picks a random book from it, fingers tracing over the spine. As she flips through the pages she struggles understanding what she is seeing. Much of it speaks of sorcery, but also things she had never heard of. Suddenly, long white fingers pluck the book from her grasp, sliding it back into its place.
“Do not touch my things!” The venom and anger in his voice causes her to cringe as he towers over her. Taking a step back, she presses her hand against the shelf behind her and winces as it comes into contact with her blistered skin. Loki’s eyes narrow as he catches her slight grimace.

“You are injured?” He roughly grabs her hand, flipping it over, but avoids the injury. Jess keeps her mouth clamped shut to keep from further angering the god. His fingers lightly brush along the tender pink skin as he mumbles once more, his eyes focusing on the burnt skin. A cool feeling washes over the throbbing nerves, numbing them. “That will help with the pain, and increase the healing process, now sit down and be quiet.” Jess’ temper flares at his commanding words.

“Who do you think you are to tell me what to do?!” Loki stops mid stride and slowly turns around, anger clearly written across his face.“I am the one who saved you! You should be bowing before your king! Instead, you are ungrateful!” His feet bring him a bit closer with each word.Jess clenches her hands at her side, talking through gritted teeth. “Did I ask to be saved! I don’t think so! Now why don’t you come down off your high horse and talk to me like I’m a-“ Suddenly his hand closes around her throat as he shoves her roughly against the bookshelf, pressing close to her. His warm breath brushes across her face, leaving a minty scent behind as he talks to her with dangerously calm voice.

“Raise your voice to me one more time woman and see if I don’t slit your throat and watch you bleed out on my bedroom floor.” Jess’s eyes widen at his threat and she gives a small nod, knowing he will most likely follow through if she doesn’t comply. “Good.” Releasing her, he turns, and walks over to his bed, pulling his tunic over his head and discarding it to the side. Her eyes cant help but to roam over his lean frame, admiring his beauty. She knows she shouldn’t find him attractive, but her body doesn’t seem to care. A wave of heat slowly travels over her body as he begins to shrugs out of his pants. She blushes and turns her back on him, giving him some privacy.

A soft groan sounds throughout the room and she glances over her shoulder at the god. Loki lays sprawled out across the bed, eyes closed with an arm over his stomach and the other tossed across the bed. Wearing only a pair of black silk pajama bottoms, she can clearly see large black bruises all across his body.Jess can feel the fatigue setting in as she walks around the room.

“Are you going to rest or not, it is quite late. Time is different here than of Midgard, your body can sense that.” Jess glances over at Loki, eyeing him cautiously. He gazes at her with a cold expression, somewhat irratated. She nods and heads towards the chase, Loki propping up on his elbows as she turns her back on him.“And what exactly do you think you are doing?” Her steps falter a bit as she reaches the chair, sitting down and reclining back on it.

“Um, well resting…like you told me to do.”
Loki sighs, running a hand over his face. Standing he pads over to her and scoops her up, easily carrying her, the gesture catching her off guard. Walking her over to the bed, he drops her on one side and crawls under the silk covers, blowing out the candle on the nightstand, casting the room into darkness. Jess’ hands shake as she pulls back the covers, crawling in as well and lies down. Fatigue wins against the war she is waging within herself. Loki’s breathing slows and deepens after a while of uninterrupted silence.

Her eyelids become heavy as she listens to the in and out of his breathing, lulling her to the edge of consciousness. She jumps as she feels an arm snake around her waist, pulling her close. Warm breath blows across her neck as he nuzzles his face into the crook between her shoulder and jaw. His even steady breathing tells her that he is still asleep. Her body slowly begins to relax against the warmth of him, pressing close. Her eyes once again drift close, welcoming the blackness that awaits her.

No by all means please do leave constructive criticism! I'm always open to it in an effort to make my writing much better. :) I had actually written the story in first person which is what I'm am more familiar with, but I felt that it would flow better in third. So writing it in a view I'm not quite familiar with has been a bit of a challenge, so when someone gives me suggestions, I really do appreciate them. I'm taking your advise into consideration, and will try to fix the writing as best as I can. Do feel free to give me your opinion if you catch my next chapter. Thanks! :)

Hello there. I just clicked on your fanfiction quite randomly, and I just wanted to leave a comment.

First things first: I'm afraid I'm a douchebag reviewer ;) I really try hard to leave constructive criticism, which can lead to me being a little nitpicky or preachy. I apologise in advance; I don't mean any harm and I only want to help you.

I think you have a flavour for the dramatic and your writing style seems solid and steeped in emotional undertones, which is very pleasing. It might have been better to use past tense, since the world of writing has apparently set itself on using this tense, which would make your fic look more smoothly. Furthermore, using paragraphs would make it more easy to savour your fanfiction.

Kudos however for dramatic descriptions, they are really a delight to read.
