Little Girls

One

"Good morning Miss Barnes." A woman dressed in a nurse uniform greeted, toting a tray of breakfast foods. I glanced around the room which was decked out to look exactly like that of a 1940's hospital room.

"Good morning." I replied quietly. The woman set the food down at the edge of the bedside table and smiled.

"Big day today. Lots to do. But first, do you mind if I take your blood pressure?" I held out my arm for her. She wrapped the navy blue arm strap around my right bicep and began to squeeze the pump.

"How come you're trying so hard to make this seem like a different time? The police man told me when I woke up. This is 2014." The woman looked up slightly startled. I waited expectantly. She scribbled down some numbers and sighed. Pulling up a small device she pressed a button and said "She knows."

Almost immediately the doors opened to allow entrance to a man with a black coat and eye patch.
"Miss Barnes." He spoke, his voice ringing with authority.

"Maggie. You can call me Maggie."

"Maggie. I suppose you want to know what's going on. And I'll tell you, as soon as you can answer a few questions for me."
"Yeah. Okay." I agreed.
"What is the last thing you remember before waking up a few days ago?"
"Not much. I remember people being excited because the war was close to being over. I remember going to Annie's for my birthday-- that's a diner, er, was a diner. And I sort of remember saying goodbye and leaving, but I don't remember anything else."
"What about the people who took you? You were taken, all reports say the waitress saw you get hit in the head and put in a car." The man responded.
It was hard to think of a response to that. To know I'd been taken and couldn't remember was terrifying, but I decided that I'd tell the truth.
"I don't remember. I'm sorry."
"You were taken, gone for almost 70 years, you don't remember any of that?"
"No. I'm sorry." It was stressing me out, the questions he was asking, the fact that I couldn't remember anything except for one horrifying fact.
"What do you remember?!" The man asked, keeping persistent.
"I can't remember anything! I ate at that diner, I walked out, I woke up in that building!"
The man turned to one of the people in white lab coats next to him. "Call in Cap. Maybe he can get through to her." I furrowed my eyebrows as two of the people left. I slowly pulled back my covers, allowing my feet to swing to the side and touch the floor. The man who was interrogating me watched me wearily.
"I've been around for 86 years. How am I still sixteen?" I murmured. The man was silent for a few moments, watching me as I stretched out by the bed.
"My name is Fury, and I'm part of a government agency called S.H.I.E.L.D. I'm not quite sure how you did it yet, but one way or another, we're going to find out." Despite the tone used to assure me of this, Fury's words did not make me feel better.
After a few moments of me walking around the room aimlessly and Fury watching my every move, there was a knock on the door. Fury stood and left the room for a few minutes, leaving me to try and decide how to approach this newcomer. I didn't want to be rude, but the more someone asked me to remember, the more freaked out I got about not being able to. I hoped he wouldn't badger me more. I sat on the edge of one of the chairs, nibbling at my breakfast as everyone else stood outside the room.
When the I heard the door open, my head shot up.
"Maggie," The same woman who had brought me breakfast stepped into the room. "There is someone here who we think might be able to help you remember some things. In fact, you and he are from the same time. He was fighting in the war. We've asked him to talk to you. Is that okay?" I didn't understand why she was asking. It was obvious that should I say no the man would come in anyways.
"Yes. That's okay." She nodded and left the room. I waited for the 90-something year old man to be wheeled in, but instead, in walked a muscled young man.
"Maggie, huh? That's the name of my best friends' sis--" My heart stopped. I couldn't believe the person I was seeing.
"Steve!" I exclaimed. He looked up, surprise on his face as I jumped out of my chair and hurried to throw my arms around him in a hug. This is what I needed. A familiar person to hug me and tell me things would be okay.
"Maggie?!" He hugged me back tightly, rubbing his hand over my back in a comforting gesture.
"Steve-- Steve, Bucky. Bucky's still alive. Bucky didn't die. He's alive, Steve. I know it." I rambled wiping my face free of stray tears. Steve nodded pulling back to look at me before pulling me back in for a hug.
"I know, Mags. I know."
It was then that I found out that the brother I once knew and loved had been turned into someone much more sinister.
